Do others soak dog kibble overnight and leave it out?

Hi ,

I soak my dogs kibble overnight and leave it in the kitchen. It's all soft and mushy in the morning , and she absolutely loves it! I was reading about bacteria growing b/c of it being left out all night but so far all ok , no sickness etc from her.
Do there people do this too?

It’s not something I do but you could leave it in the fridge to soak and get it out to warm up to room temperature before you need it.

Never. Forty plus years of dogs and I just add a splash of water to the kibble before they scarf it down. Crunching is good for their teeth.

I do a 50/50 kibble and wet food and a little
water to make a nice stew. So no need to
soak.

Springup24 · 18/05/2026 14:58

I scoop it out of the bag, into his bowl, he eats it, and the whole thing from start to finish takes about 4 seconds 😅

I add water to my dog's kibble because he is an idiot who forgets to drink. However, if you just add a little splash of warm water it takes about 30 seconds to go all mushy if that's what she likes.

I used to soak my sprocker's food overnight. I'd put his daily allowance in a tupperware tub, add water and put the lid on. Then he'd have half for breakfast and the rest for dinner.
My cocker used to have oats that were soaked overnight.

No idea about bacteria growth, but neither of them became ill from it. And to be honest, they've eaten far worse, scavenging on walks. Rotting carcasses and human faeces to name but two.

My 2 Lhasa Apso have wet food pouches for breakfast then dry kibble for dinner. They are perfectly happy to eat it dry. They have plenty of fresh water which they drink.

bugalugs45 · 18/05/2026 15:48

Kibble is so highly processed I wouldn’t worry about bacteria at all, plus their guts can handle it a lot better than we as humans can anyway .
my dog is raw fed and will often bury a bone in garden , dig it up 2 days later and eat it covered in mud, no ill effects!

MyThreeWords · 18/05/2026 16:06

Crunchy is better I think. Slower to eat (=more stimulation) and the friction cleans their teeth a little bit.

My dog has raw food, which is mushy, and I worry about the lack of crunch. sometimes I give a carrot or a bit of swede for pudding to make up for it.

Turnedtochaos · 18/05/2026 21:15

I put a splash of boiling water over mine and then feed once it’s cooler. They love it!

HappiestSleeping · 18/05/2026 21:17

Used kibble for training. Daily allocation goes in treat pouch, whatever is left at the end of the day can be spread in the garden for a bit of nose work, or put in a bowl.

Buildingthefuture · 18/05/2026 21:22

Dogs literally eat shit so I’m sure a bit of over night soaked kibble won’t kill them!
But no, I don’t do that with mine.

Food in bowl, splash of water, head long rush as they all get stuck in is what happens here!
Raw fed comes with its own bacterial issues, so isn’t superior.
