How to get a urine sample from a dog

We have a Pomeranian (not a tiny one). He’s 9 years old. He’s a rescue and we’ve had him about a year. He has always had a bit of a ‘wet willy’ which he licks a lot, sometimes grunting as he does so. We took him to the vet this week, largely about something else but mentioned this and she advised a urine sample. So.. any tips on how to get one?? Or what might be causing the issues? Thanks.

My mil fastened an old plastic plate to a garden cane and pushed it under the dog mid wee.

My neighbour did it with a ladle, very elegant. Not going round for soup any time soon

Interesting ideas! The vet suggested chasing him around with a clean ice cream tub..

I'm surprised the vets didn't insert an in/out catheter to get a clean sample at the time. I don't work in animal health so maybe that isn't commonly done?

In humans, it a mid stream urine you collect- so not the first bit of wee, but anything after that. I used a sterile urine pot and kept my dog within a smaller area of the garden and shoved it underneath when she squatted. The ladle is a very good idea that I shall keep in mind if I ever need to collect another.

I just followed my boy around with a tub of some sort and sprung into action when he started peeing, lol. Bit of a pain but perfectly doable.

I chased my boy round with a takeaway tub then decanted it into the sterile pot .

Seems like that’s what I’ll have to do!

We have a special ladle and a special funnel, kept very firmly separate from our own!

My vet has these:

My female dog wondered wtf I was playing at though 😂
