What dog breeds would you consider to be the smelliest?

This has been partly inspired by a post I read about Saint Bernards having a putrid breath. Apparently their smell is so strong it completely takes over a room (or potentially the whole house). I also read Basset Hounds are very smelly. I know all dogs smell but what breeds have you found to be the worst for it?

People have told me long haired dachshunds have very smelly ears. Pity because they’re so cute.

We have a regularly stripped mini schnauzer who doesn’t shed or smell, even to strangers’ noses.
Bad breath in dogs is often due to tartar and St Bernard’s are slobbery so tartar may build up faster.

My big lurcher is smelly. A strong ‘dog’ smell

WildGarden · 11/05/2026 10:07

Isn't it more to do with food and clean blankets than breed.

Kadiofakit · 11/05/2026 10:11

I have a wired hair terrier and he has a bit of a dog smell but not very bad I don't think ;-)
I remember friends and families when I was young who had Yorkshire terriers and oh my they really smelled

YooBlue · 11/05/2026 20:51

Wet spaniel

Dearg · 11/05/2026 20:58

Spaniels. Especially cockers. Although the individually stinkiest dog I know - your hands reek if you pat her - is a Cavalier.

My lab smells like watermelon, so very sweet in comparison.

I agree with @WildGarden , decent food and frequent washing of bedding does help.

TTCbabynumber22025 · 11/05/2026 21:06

I also agree that it’s not necessarily the dogs but the blankets and things, how often they’re groomed and how well cared for they are. My friend had 3 golden retrievers and her Mum took amazing care of them and the house never smelt at all. I visited someone with two Bernese mountain dogs a couple of weeks ago and their house smelt so strongly, it was almost eye watering. The house was a bit unkempt though.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/05/2026 21:18

Labradors can really reek

Rowgtfc72 · 11/05/2026 21:22

I minded someones children as a summer job and also ended up minding the family's red setter. Never smelt anything so bad in my life.

My lovely Bernese could be a bit smelly…however, once I started having her regularly professionally groomed and kept her coat short-ish (brushed every day) and raked out the under-layer, it drastically reduced the pong. I also changed out her bedding every couple of days.

I think as dog owners, we have to accept a certain amount of ‘doggie smell’ from most breeds, but there’s a lot that can be done to reduce it.

TheChosenTwo · 11/05/2026 21:26

Oh god @TTCbabynumber22025 we knew someone who had a Bernese mountain dog too and him and the house absolutely stank. Anything that came in and out of the house had a lingering smell of dog 😭
they brushed him but not sure he was ever properly groomed/washed/trimmed or anything and they definitely weren’t washing carpets or bedding. Absolutely foul.
very loving gentle calm dog but bloody hell I hated going round and hardly wanted to touch him 🥴

Sickallday · 11/05/2026 21:31

The in laws have had a number of greyhounds and all of them have had the stinkiest wind I have ever known. It was almost unbearable.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 11/05/2026 21:36

Ah, another dogs are unpleasant thread on Mumsnet. Colour me surprised.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/05/2026 21:37

I find Labradors and spaniels quite smelly, fur-wise. They’re still delightful though.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/05/2026 21:41

Don’t feel offended on dogs’ behalf @TheBeaTgoeson1- they would be thrilled to know they honk! (You’ve surely noticed how much they enjoy stuff that smells bad?)

Shrinkhole · 11/05/2026 21:44

I have a long haired mongrel mutt and before I had him I always assumed that long haired dogs would smell more but have been pleasantly surprised. I’m not saying he doesn’t smell of dog at all but much less than many other people’s short haired dogs like labs. If you stroke him your hand isn’t oily and smelly like it can be with some dogs. Because I have to brush him daily to keep him from getting tangled and also take him to the groomers every few months I think it does reduce the amount of shedding and maybe therefore smell.

The only times he does smell is if he rolls in something awful. Dead seal on a beach. That was gut wrenching.

Leonbergers · 12/05/2026 17:17

I think it’s down to maintenance.

Mine stink if the undercoat isn’t brushed out and regularly maintained. They also stink if they are left wet without being dried properly!

Lordofmyflies · 12/05/2026 18:53

Spaniels and Labs. I wonder if it’s to do with wet dogs?

VanGoSunflowers · 12/05/2026 19:04

I have a lab and he doesn’t smell strongly at all. He can do pretty smelly farts though… as can my friend’s greyhound

Millymollymandy4 · 12/05/2026 19:04

Newfoundlands bloody stink

RaininSummer · 12/05/2026 19:06

My spaniel was a little stinker because his ears were always in his food bowl and he enjoyed rolling in disgusting things when out.

mugglewump · 12/05/2026 19:10

Show cockers have stinky ears, but our old working cocker didn't and her paws smelled of popcorn. The golden retriever we have now is mch smellier.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 12/05/2026 20:12

I’ve two spaniels of the same type (and family!). One doesn’t smell at all, one really really smells of dog

franksmama · 12/05/2026 20:17

Rescue greyhounds usually stink because their teeth aren’t looked after at all when they are in racing kennels Sad my friend adopted an ex-racer who was about four years old and he had to have so many teeth pulled because they were rotten.

curious79 · 12/05/2026 20:23

My in-laws are fastidious in the way they look after their mongrel - probably the child of a collie / terrier combo. Their car still makes me want to heave if I ever get in it. All these fog owners who think their dogs and houses don’t smell have just got used to it. 😂
