Five year old dog suddenly overactive and destructive in the evenings

I have a five year old dog we’ve had from a puppy. He seems to have lost his off switch in the evenings. He can spend over an hour mouthing and scratching furniture, trying to chew cushions, pulling at clothing. He has plenty of exercise during the day, eats well and is happy and healthy. I have tried lots of approaches - playing with him too near the end of the day gets him over stimulated, have tried lickmats and chews but once he has had them he returns to marauding around. It’s like he’s a toddler and he has to keep going until he flakes out and this is lasting longer and longer. What am I doing wrong? Its only in the evenings he is like this.

.Do you do training or play or scent work? I would work his brain, it's an easy thing to do and get an answer one way or the other

Instead of interacting with him I would be forcing him to settle using a tether if necessary. Chews and lick mats will only give him more energy.

So he plays up then you reward him then he plays up, that's a pattern and assuming neutered as that can calm a male down

How much excercise is 'plenty' ?

My 9.5 year old dog occasionally gets a bit wound up in the evening and reverts back to asshole puppy mode. I just give a firm interrupter (‘No’) and if that doesn’t stop him he gets shoved out of the room for a few minutes to calm down. Always does the trick and normal sleepiness resumes.
