Please note we have been at vets for last 3 hours!

My sister came downstairs this morning to her 1yo Spaniel lay in her crate, not greeting her.
She didn't want to come out of her crate. Sis got her out and saw her eye (pictured) and immediately called me then the vets.
Whilst on hold her dog was just sat, not following her, not attempting to move. She carried her outside, she would not wee.
Sis brought her back inside on couch and she almost fell off it. Dog collapsed, still awake but just fell flat.
I went to pick her up, she is registered with PDSA and by this time it was 10am and she had been trying to get through for an hour from 9am opening and all through car journey.

In vets was about 45min wait during which the dogs 2nd eye started to swell and lids fill with blood. She now has 2 blood filled eyes.
Dog urinates itself several times.
She then started chomping rapidly with lots of foam coming out of her mouth.
Dog is completely ignoring her name/calls/clicks etc.

Get into vets. Vets looked at eyes, felt tummy. Weighed her and asked questions about toxins, weed etc (non known to be present in house)
She took dog to see another vet to consult.

She comes back and says dogs temperature is fine and we will give her some eye drops.

Thats it. Eye drops. I said she is urinating herself, she is not responding to her name, she is frothing, she doesn't want to move. She cannot stand for more than a minute. She is a 1 year old spaniel, she is usually bouncing off the walls. Surely there is something else going on?

She said to take her home with eyedrop and ring back if anythings changes (yeah good luck ringing back when they don't answer the emergency phone line)

We took dog to waiting area for meds and tried standing her up, she stood for about 1 mins getting head scratches and collapsed. She fell right on her face, legs given out from under her.

The staff at counter see this and rush to help her and take her back to vet.

We got back into vets who says 'we couldn't find where the blood was coming from'
What blood? Nobody mentioned blood, they thought she had started bleeding??

They then said they will run a blood test.

We wait and blood test is normal.

She days they will prescribe an anti inflammatory and a flea treatment that covers lungworm.

Vet then says the dog is probably just tired. I said she collapsed, she said she doesn't think she collapsed she just 'lay down'
I said she fell heavily and her fell flat against the floor.

She just said to ring if we need to.

Does anyone have a clue what could be going on with her?

We kept trying to push to find out and they hust kept saying they don't know and to take her home.
I just feel really weird about it! Surely a dog in that state should be admitted?

Any vets/ vet nurses about? Urgent help needed.

Just bumping for you. No idea about poor doggie but it certainly doesn't sound right, sounds like an emergency to me.
Fingers crossed for poor dog. 🤞

How awful for you all. I work in human health care, not animals.
My first thought was a trauma to the face- running into a post/fence etc can give you a subconjunctival haemorrhage in the eye like that, but you said it was crated and kept collapsing. My 2nd thought was a stroke. Another thought it glaucoma but seems very odd.

Did they look in the dogs eyes with a bright light to see the back of the eye ball?

Throwawayusernameforme · 07/05/2026 14:17

It's if possible that the doggy collapsed in the crate, and injured his eye?

They need to get to the bottom of the collapsing! He sounds like a very very unwell dog.

No! They didn't shine a light in her eyes at all!

I was thinking a brain bleed or stroke or something?

They just wanted to send us home they weren't interested at all. Well the vet wasn't. The reception staff all seemed really concerned

Maybe but why would it spread to the other eye? We checked her other eye at about 9.30am and it was normal, by time we were sat in waiting room it started getting all the blood round the edges and around the eye started to swell.

That’s awful. Can you take her somewhere else OP? I’m not a vet but I was a Spaniel owner for 14 years and I wouldn’t be happy with being brushed off like that at all. Poor dog sounds very unwell Sad

Needanadultgapyear · 07/05/2026 14:32

It sounds like they maybe suspicious of lungworm infection that can cause some dogs to develop a clotting disorder and having bleeding various different tissues.
Sadly the PDSA have really, really tight budgets and have very limited send per case. I work in clinics where we see people where the PDSA have reached the limit of the work up they can carry out, so you might need to go to a non-charity practice.

MotherofPufflings · 07/05/2026 14:34

Not a vet but I'd take her straight to another vet for a second opinion.

liloandstitchh · 07/05/2026 14:36

Do you have insurance and is there an emergency veterinary hospital near you?

I ask because they are expensive but are very good. The one I took my cat to when she was in crisis was a literal hospital with ambulances and on par with human medical treatment. My vet fobbed us off (they were experts but not incapable of getting it wrong!) and I brought my cat there as I just knew she wasn’t okay. You know your dog the best. My Nana took her cat to the PDSA and didn’t receive the best treatment, they are over stretched imo.

I would be getting a second opinion asap

Spacestory · 07/05/2026 14:37

Take her to another vet straight away. She must be in a lot of pain. Thank you for trying to do the best for her OP it's clear from your messag that you really care

bumptybum · 07/05/2026 14:40

I’m pretty sure vets who will accept pdsa can only give a limited service.

it just covers very basic care. They don’t get paid beyond that. Can you afford to pay for a full service?

hattie43 · 07/05/2026 14:41

I think your treatment has been shockingly dismissive . There is absolutely no way my own vet would not be getting to the bottom of this . I’m guessing because the PDSA are charity the options for care are limited , awful poor dog .

Its a large PDSA hospital. Their own hospital with facilities to admit animals, do surgeries etc. (it literally said on wall it costs a recommended donation of £75 per 24hrs for overnight admissions) so I really just assumed they would take her in straight away!

How is she now @Ammabovvered ?

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 07/05/2026 14:59

I think the problem here is it's PDSA and the treatment they give, as others have said, is usually very basic unless the animal is at deaths door.

You should try and see a private vet if you can as it sounds like you're still sat in the waiting room at the practice who have said they can't/won't do anymore.

spiderlight · 07/05/2026 15:02

Are her gums pale? Immune mediated haemolytic anaemia maybe?

YorksMa · 07/05/2026 15:09

Just bumping for you. This sounds very scary for all of you and I'd not be happy with vet response. I would take her elsewhere personally. Lots of love to you all.

Spendysis · 07/05/2026 16:25

I would get a second opinion

tiramisugelato · 07/05/2026 17:15

I think the issue is that you're using the PDSA. Can you afford to get her seen at a regular vets?

Her symptoms sound very similar to a dog I used to walk who had chronic kidney and liver issues.

spiderlight · 08/05/2026 10:04

How is she today, @Ammabovvered ?

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 08/05/2026 11:50

Yes, definitely wondering how the poor ddog is doing. And whether you managed to see a helpful vet.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 08/05/2026 12:42

How are they doing OP?

CoffeeNDogs · 08/05/2026 13:23

Sounds awful and worrying... did you manage to get a 2nd opinion?

RichPetuniaAgain · 08/05/2026 13:57

Do you have a small animal hospital near you? My sister took her dog to one earlier this week and said that the vet was really meticulous and thorough. She said you don’t pay for the consultation, only the treatment/meds. Hope your dog gets better 🌻.

Take her to another vet, ideally a small not a corporate vet. She needs treatment immediately
