Could a new bag of same brand kibble make my dog ill? Canagan.

Labrador (7) has eaten canagan kibble for ever. I opened a new bag on Tuesday. Dog was sick last night and again this morning not long after eating.

He’s eaten a dentastix with no issues, will eat gravy bones. And to be on the safe side I’ve made him some fresh chicken which he’s eaten. Won’t go near the kibble.

anyone else had this reaction to a new bag of kibble? I assume they could’ve changed the recipe but I wouldn’t describe him as a dog with a sensitive stomach or a fussy eater.

Op, I put your thread on my watch list, hoping someone with more knowledge than I , would chime in.

But here’s what I think :

Contact Canagan and ask if anything has changed

Your dog could become allergic to an ingredient at any time even without a change so consider that

He’s a lab, and usually they eat anything ( although my bitch is a fussy one), so time for a vet check, and ask them to check his pancreas ( surprisingly, the emergency vet missed this with my older boy and we came close to losing him)

Selectively eating in my boy was a sign that he had the onset of pancreatitis, which is more common as they age.

Hope you boy is on the mend

Thanks @Dearg Still no change, he won’t go anywhere near the kibble. He seems ok in himself otherwise. I’ll get an appt with the vet and get him checked over.
In the meantime, any suggestions on what to feed him? He’s generally not fussy at all food wise - typical lab in that respect

Hi again, try a low-fat vet food, possibly even hypoallergenic. My dog generally likes Purina Pro HA in tins ( won’t tough the kibble) , or Royal Canin Hypoallergenic with duck or chicken.

Or just boiled chicken breast with white rice ?

Hope he is doing better.

Chicken and rice? Wolfworthy kibble is good. Mine is on raw so don’t know much about kibbles.

My dog used to have autarky. Always the same flavour. Got a new bag and she wouldn’t touch it. Contacted them and they had changed the formula.
Worth asking if the stuff you have has been changed.
We switched to Millie’s wolfheart.

How's your dog doing @loveisreason ? Hope he is feeling better now. What did the vet say - do you think it was a change in the food?

loveisreason · 08/05/2026 12:29

Thanks all - dog is much better thanks. Had a few days on chicken and rice and have slowly re-introduced kibble mixed in, which he’s eating.
we contacted canagan and they have changed the manufacturer which they say has slightly altered the composition of the kibble but ingredients haven’t changed. Anyway, we’ve booked a checkup at the vets anyway just to be safe.
funnily enough, prior to his refusal we were dealing with his extremely stinky wind. Since he’s been on the chicken and rice we’ve had none of that.
im also going to do some investigation on other kibble types, and thanks for the recommendations. He was on raw food as a young dog, but never seemed overly taken by it. But may try again.

Pleased he's much better - always a worry when a good eater stops eating!
And good idea to see the vet just to be sure.
