Dog barks as we arrive at our destination

And it’s ear splitting! We drive practically every day to a number of different walks, he’s a tall dog so he can see out of the windows of the boot. He’s never liked the car much but the walks nearby are really limited. As we arrive at our walk and as we arrive home he barks, a really high pitched bark, I know he's excited to be where we’ve arrived but its really hard to park up with him yapping in the back. Any ideas please? He wouldn’t take a treat and if hes in the car he tries to climb into the front

I'd arrive then drive off again and go home

the one time no barking I'd be out the car like a shot but no noise no excitement.

basically how I'd treat a toddler 😂

By home I meant a boring walk iukwim

SirChenjins · 23/04/2026 13:34

Ours does exactly the same - and from what I see/hear from other dogs, it's very common! It's just how many of them express their excitement. I've tried 'settle', or only letting him out on 'quiet', but neither works - so now I just go with it and let him out to sniff which regulates him.

The thing is that dogs aren't baby humans. He won't associate being taken home without an anticipated exciting walk with the idea that it's punishment because he barked.

I don't get how you can't park with him barking? Turn the radio up?

Do you know much about dogs?

He also barks when we arrive home so that really wouldn’t work

I'd spend longer waiting in the car and not get out till he's quiet

Roads · 05/05/2026 12:34

Honestly he's just excited and the best way to calm him is to park quickly and get him straight out. He won't understand it's distracting you he just wants to get out of the car as quickly as he can.

MyDuvetDay · 05/05/2026 12:38

As he’s just excited

Ginorchoc · 05/05/2026 12:38

Can you bung him a snack to distract him whilst you park?

Ginorchoc · 05/05/2026 12:39

Although saying that, he might think it’s a reward and make it worse 😂

Kadiofakit · 05/05/2026 14:47

My one has a variant of this, he doesn't bark while parking up but the first bit of the walk, he barks at everything and anything for a few minutes. Very annoying but manageable. I feel for you and get the distraction is horrible when parking.

Why is the dog not in a proper car harness for dogs? For your safety as much as his?
