Greyhound - feeding and toileting schedule

She's been with us for 3 months, retired racer aged 5. Adapted well to living in a house and seems happy but still some issues with toileting. Has 3 cups of kibble and can of wet food at 6am and 4.30pm. Have tried making the evening meal later but she indicates she's hungry. Goes ones out forc walk at 8pm and then toilets in the garden before we go yo bed atc10pm.
Mostly no toiletting issues in the house during the day yet at night theres wee and poo found in the morning. Occasionally will cry to be let out about 3.30pm and we always respond to this which avoids the toiletting in the house. We're both ridiculously light sleepers so don't think we're not hearing her.

Not prepared to crate her but wondering if her schedule could be tweaked. If you've experience or ideas let us know

Hi there, she could be stressed at night which is causing the toileting issue , I have a Lurcher but have had her since she was a pup , for the first few months at night I put a large cat litter tray in the downstairs hall , she used it at night , after about a month no more night time accidents and the litter tray was no longer needed . She liked the feel of the kitty grit and I think when presented with an alternative toilet other than the floor she was happy to use it . Also grey hounds and lurchers are big babies mine needs a night light and a teddy ! ❤️

I think that she might be cold or worried at night, ime cold often seems to wake them in the early hours then they want a wee. Does she have pyjamas?

Huyhuy · 17/04/2026 15:52

CMOTDibbler no she doesn't have pyjamas. Its not a cold house and as she'd previously lived in outdoor kennels had presumed shed feel too warm if anything

That sounds like a lot of food

Letsgoforaskip · 17/04/2026 18:11

I agree that that sounds like a huge volume of food. My very large greyhound had a bean tin of kibble with a desert spoon of canned food twice a day.

As Others said, it could be over feeding her, she could be cold, or anxious. Where does she sleep? Is she on her own?

mine eat at 7am and 4pm, toilet before bed. Pyjamas on (my house isn’t cold) and then in their beds which are in our bedroom around 9pm. They get annoyed if you stay up late. They only get up in the night if they’ve got stomach issues from eating something bad or need to throw up pieces of a stick or something.

PixelDreamer Letsgoforaskip you're right, I'm overfeeding her, are I. She was underweight when she came to us but not now. This is obvious now you've pointed it out.

Fibrous will try pyjamas
