I miss my dog more than I miss humans

I lost my dog a few weeks ago. I had him over 15 years. I got him when I was single, living alone, and going through a very tough time in life. A couple years later, I met my now husband, had children etc. We all adored him. But he was MY dog. My boy. My light. My constant. My guiding heartbeat on a dark day and my companion and partner in crime on a good day.

The stillness in the house without him is excruciating.

I was thankful for him every day.

But when it was his time, and he quietly went to sleep in my arms, wrapped in his little blanket, it is like a part of me died with him.

Since he’s been gone, I feel so utterly lost.

He was amazing. Totally and utterly amazing. The very best of his breed.

Dogs are better than most humans.

Sending love to you OP and everyone else who relates, its such a terrible pain, ive lost people close to me but i swear losing our first boy hit me harder than anyone, i just couldn't accept he’d gone. We do it again though, for anyone wondering why we do, google “you have chosen tears”, its a hard read but there you have it in black and white

I feel really moved reading these accounts of loss. What a wonderful bond we have with our pets. In some ways it’s the purest love.

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my boy who was 15y11m last October.

It is easier, until I reach for him. My hot water bottle. My conscience. My barometer. My comfort in happy and sad times. My best friend. I still shed tears most days.

All we can do is lean in and feel it.

My beautiful JRT died nearly 7 years ago ,she was my partner in crime ,my sanity going through the teenage years . I still use her name for all my passwords…yes I know! I have another JRT who I absolutely adore and she is my favourite company now the children have moved out of.
OP I am so sorry, our little four legged warriors are irreplaceable ❤️
edit to say I am not sure why my post has reposted!

I’m so sorry for your loss. I feel this way about the two cats I’ve lost over the years - I would definitely feel it with a dog too. It’s a pain like no other. It’s been 4 years since I lost my cat of almost 18 years, and when I think of her, I still get choked up.

Oh this made me cry. I posted about my DDog but couldn't bring myself to mention the loss of my DCat - its still too raw. She died on 2nd April a few weeks shy of her 18th birthday. I am now howling for my two best beasts. My girl was truly special - the softest silver tabby Norwegian Forest Cat. I was her human and she was my shadow. Life and home are both so empty without her.

I wish I’d got a dog in my early twenties, instead of dating the useless bunch of bad men I came across. If only I’d known then what I know now. I didn’t need a man. I just needed a loyal, loving, furry companion.

Even now, it’s like my secret mental heath weapon. Sometimes I tell myself - well if the husband ever leaves me, I’ll be fine because I’ll just go out and get a new puppy. It will sleep on my bed, just like my boy did, and I’ll lie there listening to its heartbeat and I’ll be just fine.

But my boy I lost. I don’t know. He was something extra to me. He can’t ever be replaced really and that does scare me.

I’m really sorry. My girl was end of March 2022, She would have been 18 on the 12th April that year, so a similar birthday to your girl. I hope your pain gets easier soon. Maybe our cats are playing somewhere together now.

I’ve got this looming. I agree entirely with you. The love I have for my dog is the same as anyone else I love deeply and I’m so sad at what’s coming for me. I often say to my DD that I would forfeit any other pet forever if I could have 5 more years with my dog.

I feel like a complete idiot. I don't own a dog because I have a cat but would absolutely love to adopt a greyhound.

I follow a few on Instagram and one has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I can't stop being upset about it . I watch his little adventures and it always brightens up my day. I can't imagine what it's like for his owner.

So sorry for all of you who have lost a special friend.
