Retained puppy teeth

Morning all, my gorgeous Goldie is 6 months old. I’ve noticed that his upper and lower canine teeth have adult teeth but also the puppy teeth are still alongside them. I’ve had a wiggle and they don’t seem to be moving at all. Booked an appointment with the Vet to get this checked out and obviously googled the issue which suggests they may need extraction, but also the wait-and-see option could be best - then remove when he is under GA for castration when he is older.

He spends a lot of time chewing and gnawing away at various toys and bones so I don’t think it’s through lack of using his jaw that these teeth are not fallen out. Anyone experience similar and what the outcome was for you? Thanks

My Goldies all still have their baby teeth at the front - although admittedly the back of the mouth is different 😃 6 months is still young so I honestly wouldn’t fret too much about it.

Pictured - my seven year old with her little baby front nashers.

So cute! So do they have both the baby and adult tooth @TheHungryHungryLandsharks?

My younger pup (lab) kept her baby fangs for a bit whilst her adult ones were in place. They fell out eventually. I mentioned it to the vet at a different appointment and they said they're very likely to come out on their own but they weren't worried if they stayed in.

You can just make them both out here

I had this issue with both of my dogs and both of their retained puppy teeth fell out on their own when they were just over 2 years old!

For context, they are the same breed and brothers from different litters, 1 year apart in age.

Before they fell out on their own, the vet mentioned extraction but said they wouldn't advise it since it would involve GA for something that wasn't causing any issues.

Might be the same with you? I brush my dogs teeth so I'm not sure if that helped things along or not.

Your dog is beautiful ❤

Not a dog, but I had this with one of my cats.

@spartanrunnergirl they only have baby teeth at the front, no adult front ones at all. But they have adult canines etc. I’m pretty sure it’s a genetic ‘defect’ (as some would call it), as I have so many that are related. DSis has a girl from the bitch above, and her girl doesn’t have adult front teeth either!

Thanks everyone for commenting. Very reassuring. @tizwozlizthat is exactly what my boy’s teeth are like.

Oh my gosh @TheHungryHungryLandsharks I read your earlier comment as 7 months not years! Bless her how cute little teeth :)
