Dog ate hot cross bun

My dog just ate half a hot cross bun that I’d put out for the birds. Should I be worried? I’ve checked the ingredients and the fruit was sultanas. I’m guessing he probably at maybe 5 at most. He is a 16kg cocker spaniel.

Speak to your vet. Some dogs have a very bad reaction to sultanas/ raisins, but it may not be immediately obvious.

Hope he is Ok.

Raisins/Sultanas can be toxic to some dogs and cause kidney failure in any quantity. It is not related to dog size or amount consumed. You need to see a vet

PurpleLovecats · 09/04/2026 12:23

You need to call your vets.

Or does your insurance have a 24 hr hotline? Mine does so it could be a good starter point.

Call vet straight away - this happened to my mums dog - he ate 1 raisin. The vet told her to take him in immediately and they pumped his stomache until the raisin came out!

Unfortunate but I recently got home to find a feral cat had stolen and eaten most of 2 pain au chocolates. Chocolate, sugar and refined flour are bad, possibly fatal for cats but guess what, 3 days later it was back looking for more! The little shit.

As with other posters, definitely speak to your vet. My vet told me that while only a small percentage of dogs of dogs will react, by the time they show symptoms, they are already in kidney failure.

BiteyShark · 09/04/2026 16:08

If it contained raisins then you won’t know if your dog is one of the unlucky ones that causes a reaction that can kill them. I went on a dog first aid course and the vet running it said unlike chocolate where there is clear formula to decide toxicity grapes/raisins are an unknown quantity in unknown dogs so the best course of action is to get them to the vet asap.

My dog did this last year. Had to take him to the vets, was given an emetic and then in for monitoring for a few hours. Most expensive hot cross bun ever

PurpleLovecats · 09/04/2026 17:59

Any update?

My 25kg Lab ate a Taste the Difference mince pie, just before Christmas. After insurance paid a chunk it cost about £100. Very expensive mince pie! But you can't tell which dogs will be affected and the effects are not proportionate to the amount consumed. I thought it wasn't worth the risk.

SquashPenguin · 09/04/2026 18:31

Your dog needs to go to the vet asap. Grapes are deadly to dogs, my dog ate two white grapes last year and he was given an emetic within half an hour of eating them. They said white grapes are the least risky, followed by red/ dark grapes and then raisins are the most dangerous. Don’t hang around.

My dog recently ate a whole jumbo bag of chocolate covered raisins that my dds friend left in the table. Im assuming she is kne of the ones not allergic to them as she is still very much alive.
