Training adult dog to pee in courtyard

Hi

i have a 2ish year old rescue dog, whom I’ve had 6 months.

We have a townhouse with a couple of courtyards and when she first arrived I got a puddle patch and she used it like a star.

But then she stopped and now will only pee outside and during the day only on the beach with is a 6 or 7 minute walk away.

I really want her to be able to do at the very least her night time pee in the courtyard. We got rid of the piddle patch a while back and I have been collecting pebbles from the beach to create a ‘mini-beach’ in the courtyard.

the courtyard has a very convenient hose and good drainage so I’m cool with flushing out the pebbles so am not worried about small or insanitary- ness.

My big issue is this - how do I get her to use it? Like the first time, so that I can reward her and encourage her. At the moment I take her out for about 2.5 hours over 3 or 4 trips and it’s just too much.

i picked a house to rent with outside space especially so I could get a dog.

she can actually hold on for a very long time.

I had trouble getting one of my dogs to pee when we moved house
He thought that the area was a no "go" zone
I ended up borrowing a family members dog who pees everywhere and getting them to pee in the garden a few times
This seemed to help encourage my dog where another dog had already pee'd in the area

Taker her on the lead and stand there with her until she dies and then make a huge fuss of her. I’ve trained ddog through a few house moves the same way every time.

Seems a bit extreme 🤣

I know it is a stupid autocorrect but I did laugh 😂.

Agree about getting another dog to pee in the courtyard

SparrowFeet · 03/04/2026 10:02

Is it paved? I don't think dogs particularly love weeing on non absorbent surfaces that aren't a lamp post. What's a puddle patch? Could you not put one of those outside and then make it smaller and smaller?

How long did it take? She can go hours without a pee…

Thank you for the suggestions - we had a neighbours dog come around and pee this afternoon - and they’ve offered to come again so we will see if that helps.

That’s how I did it. She wasn’t allowed away from the area until her job was done, She learnt. She was 8 months old when we got her.

The late, much missed SandyDog (border terrier) worked on school hours. We woke, walked, had breakfast etc before school. School run done (and she usually wasn’t brought along) she would sleep sort of until 3ish and then wake up and be part of the family until dinner, garden potter for however long she wanted and bedtime. yes, she could go for hours without needing a wee but we got into a routine and she learnt what she needed to know.

But to start with, I would take her out to the particular part of the garden and not let her out until she had done her business. Not fun for me in winter, I remember.

I just more stubborn than the dog. If I tell her to go get busy she knows I won’t let her back in the house until she does. DH does not get the same respect.

Jamfirstest · 06/04/2026 09:45

@TheSandgroperits just strict consistency isn’t it.
if she’s v stubborn cut up a sausage small and when she wees treat her. She will pick it up.
my spaniel is thick as mince but he knows the rules!

Mine once went 24 hours without a pee because she refused to go out on the rain, she has a bladder of steel.

PottingBench · 06/04/2026 10:15

I tried everything to encourage my dog to pee in the courtyard of a new house.

A little section of Astroturf, getting her friend dogs to pee around the place, treats....nothing worked. She was 8 though.

It was pretty stressful trying and eventually we just got used to taking her for regular pees on the grass along the lane.

Did you carefully read the post I was replying to?! I’ll assume not.

My stubborn beast won't pee in the garden if he wants a walk - his record was 23 hours when he was meant to be on house rest after an injury. At 23 hours I started to get worried and walked him to a nearby lamp-post he can't resist.
