Opinions on Kennel cough vaccination

We have just come back from round 2 of pup jabs. Vet was asking about Kennel cough as an additional option. The thing is, it’s a live vaccination right so weighing it up as a reasonable risk V the fact that we won’t board her ever, although we will be doing puppy training classes. Have you all done this vaccination and we should stop worrying and just crack on with it?

DDog just had his at age 2 in preparation for boarding this summer. I didn't bother with it before as he wasn't boarding then. However, I haven't noticed any side effects from it. It's also included in his vets plan so in that respect I would say no reason not to have it as if he did get kennel cough no doubt I might have to pay for treatment. I didn't have any concerns about it being a live vaccine but was supposed to keep him away from other dogs for 2-3 days and immunocompromised people for six weeks.

I always get it for my dog-it is the second time that dogs where I walk (big fields in a park) mine have had it-dogs that have never boarded.

It's not just in kennels.

Also good to have it in case of emergency-kennel required at short notice.

Mine gets his KC immunization through nose drops. No side effects that I’ve seen. Kennel cough can be nasty, dry and incessant, even leading to vomiting so best to do it IMO.

My dog gets boards when we are away , he has no side effects, he got Kennel cough as a puppy before vaccination and he was quite poorly with it, it is optional obviously but I don't think it does any harm to get it.

3smallpups · 19/03/2026 12:54

It’s live but attenuated so it can’t replicate outside of the nose , so very safe .
genuinely the only reason not to have it is cost if you don’t need it for boarding etc. it’s not like the core vaccines, no one ever dies of kennel cough, though it can be unpleasant and a nuisance. But safety of actually having it shouldn’t be a concern.

I never thought I’d use kennels and then I had to as a one off. They’d been vaccinated but still ended up with mild kennel cough. I would get it done anyway as there are a lot of dogs and dog owners of varying levels of responsibility local to us!

Ok thank you! Really appreciate the help and advice.

Oh I meant to say my last dog walker asked for it, my new one doesn't because she does solo walks, just something to be aware of if you are planning a walker.

muddyford · 19/03/2026 18:02

My dogs get it as part of their care plan. I never intend to kennel them but in an emergency at least they are covered to some extent. And these days you see coughed-up masses of foam outside from other dogs with it so mine have always had it.

BiteyShark · 20/03/2026 05:44

My 9 year old dog has had it every year. Fortunately it’s now available in an injection form as it was a fight to get him still enough when it was by nasal spray. We use dog care/walker so felt that it was best to get it as he was around other dogs.

NosnowontheScottishhills · 20/03/2026 18:18

Interesting never crossed my mind not to let my dogs have it. They go to kennels/doggy day care on a regular basis (they love it) and of course it’s mandatory and therefore I just get it done they’ve never ever had a problem.

SpanielsGalore · 20/03/2026 19:17

My dogs have never had it and my vets have never offered it as standard with their vaccinations.

I don't use kennels though.

frogpigdonkey · 20/03/2026 19:24

My dog had the vaccine once, it made him quite poorly for a day or two, and then a couple of months later he got kennel cough anyway- very unpleasant but not life threatening. Since then I haven’t bothered with the vaccine. It’s not required by my kennels or walker and I really didn’t see much benefit to it, seems a bit like flu jabs for humans to me, I’m not wildly opposed and would have it if needed for travel or similar, but not going to bother unless something requires it.

FuzzyBumbleeBee · 20/03/2026 22:34

My first 2 dogs I didn't get the vaccine, my 3rd did as I borded him.
My current 2 both have it as we also bored them.

Only two have had kennel cough my very first dog who was unvaccinated and was fine in weeks and my younger current dog.

My current boy had it terrible dispite being vaccinated a few months previously and was coughing for weeks and still has a residual ccough 6 months later the vets said he had it so badly it caused alot of damage, he was very unwell.
We don't walk him on a collar anymore as it seems to hurt him we use a harness or headcollar.

My bitch never caught it off him despite sharing water bowls and basically living in each others shadows 24/7 but she's had 3 more jabs than him.

I will always get it now.

Tel12 · 20/03/2026 22:40

My puppy was given it as a matter of course, no one asked. She's just had her first boosters she was fine. Are there issues?

Eastmeetswest1 · 21/03/2026 02:19

Our vet offers it and as we didn't know whether we would board our dog, got it done the first year. When we went back the following year, the vet asked if we had boarded the dog. We said no so they said if you don't plan on boarding, no need to pay so haven't. Touch wood we've been fine. The vets are very proactive in avoiding unnecessary charges for you (they are wonderful). They know where we are going the walks / post on their Facebook if they have any concerns / owners need to do anything.

tizwozliz · 21/03/2026 06:45

Mine have never been vaccinated. They've both had kennel cough once each and it was a day or two of symptoms at most.
