Joint Supplements

Hi all, I'm looking for recommendations for a joint supplement for my 7 year old dog who has been through two TPLO operations in the past year.

There are so many advertised and all claim miracle results but I’d like to know what ones actually work for your pups.

She currently gets Antinol (green lipped mussel oil) for her skin.

Thanks in advance for your advice ❤️

My 4 year old cocker has had two surgeries for luxating patella and is currently on crate rest following TPLO surgery. She also has arthritis in her knee.

On the advice of a sports dog nutritionist, she has the following supplements. Can't really say if they help or not, as her cruciate ligament has only just ruptured.

Thanks I’ll check them both out.

I feel for you with the TPLO, the recovery is a lot, especially the crate rest. We ended up having her in her bed beside us during the day to break things up a bit. We kept her harness on and kept a hold of her lead so she couldn’t get up or away. She was on Trazadone right enough so was happy to just lie there. Have you pups stitches healed now? The cone was another huge problem for us so we got a Lick Sleeve which was a life saver.

We use riaflex with our older dog and it’s great.

@SpinningLikeAGirlInABrandNewDress I've found it hard going this time round.
We're 3.5 weeks post surgery. The first 10 days of cone wearing were hard - she wore a body suit after the patella surgery, but the surgeon wanted the air to get to the wound this time. Fortunately that's healed well.
She's on three Trazadone a day, but I'm not convinced it's helping. She's squealing to be let out of the cage if she thinks she's missing out on something. And bouncing around like a bucking bronco when she is allowed out, despite being on lead.
The vet has said I could have her on the sofa, but my other dog tries to get her to play when she's out. So she's having kongs, licky mats and long lasting chews to amuse her.

That’s great the wound has healed, one less thing to worry about! Ours was the same in the cage to the point she was doing more damage to herself than resting, she just wanted to be right beside someone all the time for reassurance. She is a 20kg cockapoo and the trazadone completely calmed her down to the point she slept most of the time. Maybe you need a stronger dose to help her through the next couple of weeks. It’s so hard as they feel better but can’t get back to normal yet.

We were just back to some sort of normal
and the second leg went. Op for that was the beginning of October but recovery wasn’t good and in December she had a second op as the pin they inserted to stabilise the bone was too long and digging into her patella tendon. So back to square one with recovery and even now we are still sleeping downstairs with her. She is getting there but very slowly hence trying to see if a supplement might help.

Thank you so much, it’s a minefield out there trying to see behind all the marketing, so great to hear of personal experiences of ones that have helped 😊

@SpinningLikeAGirlInABrandNewDress The vet says she's on the maximum dose of Trazadone already. I'll have to ask for something stronger if we have to go through this again.

She's already had an operation to fix a luxating patella and then three months later a second one to remove the pins as it became inflamed. So this is her third extended period of crate rest. I am dreading the need to remove the metalwork again or her other cruciate ligament rupturing.

Good luck with your girl's recovery. I hope you find something to help her.

See if you can find Dog Oil and massage in. It was created for greyhounds after the race.
Humans can also use it.
Our DD uses it on her dog in with supplements. Dog is 11 and is like a puppy running around.
He had a trapped nerve in his back leg and thigh.

Thank you so much, it just feels like you can’t see the wood for the trees some days!

Mine is on gabapentin too so it might have been the combination of that and the trazadone that calmed her down.
If you ever need someone to vent to, I’m here. Hope your girl is on the mend soon ❤️
