Puppy regret- regret NOT getting the puppy

I wondered if anyone else has been through this. We as a family started researching puppy breeds about 5 months ago. We want to add a puppy to our family in the next year.

My husband has had a basset hound as a teenager and parents have a griffin Von whatever it is 🤭

A KC registered golden retriever and basset hound breeder had an accidental litter where a male GD got in the the basset hounds and one was basically a fluffy basset hound. She was very sweet but my husband was worried about the GR part as we hadn't looked into that breed and we are going away in 2 weeks so we after talking to breeder declined.

Anyway she has now gone and I keep thinking we have missed what could have been our perfect puppy because we weren't ready. I have no real reason for writing this but just wondered if anyone has felt similar?

I cannot imagine a more difficult and troublesome puppy! Combination of Bassett extreme stubbornness, scent-hound obsessiveness, dodgy ears, dodgy backs, dodgy housetraining, impossibleness to house-train, and howling, with Retriever shedding everywhere, neediness, chewiness, prone to separation anxiety and dodgy hips, never grow up and stay like teen-puppy pains in the arse for years and years and years - I think it would have been a very bad choice. Does that help?

The one you get will be amazing.

TheToteBagLady · 27/02/2026 20:35

I wouldn’t like a cross of those breeds. Go for either a basset hound or a golden retriever

It's like houses OP. It wasn't meant to be.

The puppy you end up with will be the right one.

You are regretting a fantasy puppy. You have created the perfect dog in your imagination.
You have no idea what the actual puppy is like.

Some crosses can be great for the health of the pups, I have one who's parents and grandparents were health tested beyond what most pedigree dogs get and she's great but so many checks were done before breeding to keep the pups as healthy as possible
but a golden x basset?

Honestly unless they had no idea until very far along in the pregnancy, which would make me think they weren't very good breeders, they could have terminated the litter without spaying the bitch rather than bring pups into the world who will very possibly have terrible problems with hips, elbows and goodness knows what else

While some crosses are very cute and get alot of attention from people most aren't health tested and you risk a lifetime of vet bills

The right puppy will come along for you soon, I know its heart breaking when you imagine a particular one joining your family and it ends up not happening but with that particular pup it's probably for the best

I missed out on two litters before I got my dog and obsessed about finding another pup checking adds daily and imaging what we lost out on, imagining walks with 2 dogs being perfect angels like my bitch, I even brought matching collars and leads when we were still searching, it took almost 2 years.
I did find the perfect dog eventually and I'm now so glad as he's absolutely perfect, ok thats a lie he's actually a pain in the bum teenager that needs a bit of extra training right now but I am so glad I waited to find the right dog for us rather than jumping into a random puppy.

Thank you. These breeders are council approved and KC registered. They will not be having anymore cross bred puppies as was a total mistake. My husband is set on a basset hound as it is what he is used to and with youngish children and a few cats he feels it is the best fit. I am a natural worrier and only had a dog once I was a teenager and they and my cats never got on which I don't want to happen so I am tentative.

Thank you for your realism it's what I needed to hear everyone!

This wasnt your puppy. Not your puppy not your door. That puppy is with who she is meant to be with.

Your puppy will be waiting for you and s/he will be so lucky that you waited for her/him.

Btw - that’s very probably bullshit

A decent breeder wouldn’t just go, ah well I’ve got a crossbred litter now it’d be a huge issue for their breeding plans because they’d be losing 1-2 years.

So firstly it’s a lack of just basic competence, they’ve got intact adults they should be able to keep them apart.

But also a decent breeder would have given her the mismate injection if that had happened.

It’s a really common way of bad breeders overbreeding bitches because the KC only jerks track of the KC registered ones.

You need to far less naive next time @7catsforthewin
This breeder was clearly a back yard breeder/puppy farmer.
Simple rule - and there are many more that other posters can help you with more than me - but never buy a mixed breed dog from a breeder.
