Rehoming - how do I start helping my friend?

I’ve never had dogs but my friend has a gorgeous smallish dog that she is struggling to care for properly due to a serious MS relapse. She can’t afford a dog walker so I’ve said I’d help look at options for rehoming.

The biggest stumbling block is that she doesn’t want the dog to go to a rescue centre but instead onto a new home directly from hers.

She doesn’t want to advertise as then you have no control over who turns up and if they are any good with dogs.

Is it just a case of spreading the word that there’s a dog looking for a home and hoping that a personal recommendation can be found??

Do any charities offer a dog / owner matching service but without the kennels bit in the middle?

What sort of things do I need to be looking out for / thinking about as we move down this very sad road?

Thanks for any advice

Have you looked at Cinnamon Trust? They are a charity that offer dog walking in this kind of scenario where the owner is too unwell to do it.

Ditto the cinnamon trust. They will help her keep the dog

Alot of rescues support home to home adoptions 😊 They help organise the visit and make sure the people looking to adpot have been properly checked out etc before adoptions are made permanent. Best to speak to a few to see if they provide the service.

Good luck to your friend, it must be a heart breaking decision to have to make!

The breed rescue I volunteered for did this occasionally. Most often a volunteer would have the dog in their home to assess its behaviour for several months before a proper home got involved. Kennels were rarely used.

Your friend may think direct home to home is best, but if it proves unsuitable there is nothing to stop the new home selling on the poor dog. Get her to do it responsibly.
