Incontinence

So my little boy is getting old. Since January, his sight has deteriorated rapidly, and he is starting to become incontinent. Both kinds.

Is there any way of managing this? He is not unhappy, though he doesn’t want to go for walks much. I suspect he finds it scary now that he can’t see much. He’s never has a brilliant sense of smell. But he still likes to play at home, he enjoys his food, and he loves a cuddle. I am not ready to let him go, because it feels like it would be for my convenience rather than his comfort.

It is mostly small bits of poo, but occasionally weeing too. He seems not to notice when he’s doing it and still asks to go out normally.

Vet check up would be the start but you are likely to be reaching a time to make a decision
better to let them go on a good day rather than as an emergency with pain

We had extensive tests a month ago, so I’m not planning to put him through that again. I know we probably don’t have long. Just looking for any advice on how to manage the time we do have best.

If he’s still happy in himself (and it sounds like he is) I’d start by using puppy pads in the places he has accidents or throws on any furniture he sits on. And clean as you go. Some dogs get very upset when they soil themselves, some don’t care or really notice. You know your boy best, you will know when it’s time.
I would also speak to your vet about when the time comes. Awful I know, but necessary. If you want him to pass at home, does your vet do out calls? Or would you rather take him in? From experience, having a solid plan in place made it much easier for me to enjoy the last months/weeks with my dogs…

Thank you. So far there is no discernible pattern as to where he goes, which makes it harder, but I will get some pads. He doesn’t seem to notice and certainly isn’t getting upset. If he were distressed, I wouldn’t carry on.

I will take him in at the end. Our vets are absolutely brilliant with him, and I have no worries about that. Then he’ll be buried here on the farm with his toy panda who he loves.

nappies.
tho you have to be prepared to check him frequently and of course change them if wet/dirty.
there are many nappies on the market, disposable and washable - for washable I suggest looking at Glenndarcy.
The nappy I bought I also bought 2 washable pads to go with it, tho mine was a girl and only wore it at night ( as she slept with me and I couldn't go on washing my bed )
