Clothes for Saluki/Whippet

Kwamitiki · 20/02/2026 18:39

Hi all! We are about to adopt a 3 year old Saluki/whippet cross from a rescue.

i've never had a sighthound before (only ever a small dog when I was younger!) so can anyone suggest what we need in the way of clothes, and where is good to buy it? There seem to be a lot of choices at varying price points!

You are so lucky! Salukish lurchers are lovely - my current foster is a beautiful little girl with lots of feathering.
Most will need some sort of indoor pyjamas during the winter especially at night. I love Houndtees which also work well as layering, and as outer wear in warmer weather.
For out doors you need something warm and waterproof. Blizzard coats are a good starting point, then you might want a fuller coverage overall if you tend to be out a lot.
After 14 years of lurcher ownership, I have an embarrassing number of coats and martingale collars.
As ever, just a reminder that you should never use an extending or long lead with a sighthound, and normal collars just slide off - martingale collars or harnesses (and only Perfect Fit work properly for slinky malinki saluki types).

I like the vests - they are really snug and can give a bit of warmth too at bedtime

Rydale do really reasonable coats and a good selection

Congratulations! I have had my rescue Saluki lurcher X for 6 months and he's fabulous despite his past. Boy loves to run, especially after rabbits and deer so be warned.
I have found a Huntboo harness to be the best fit. He doesn't wear clothes (except a waterproof coat) because he has a very fine but thick undercoat. Enjoy your dog!

GreyhoundLurcher · 20/02/2026 19:15

You do not need clothes! A waterproof coat for winter is all that is required. Enjoy your dog❤

Terriblytwee · 20/02/2026 19:30

On days that you need a coat, they will need a coat. Make sure it covers up to the base of the tail. In winter an indoor fleece jacket for bedtime too. Nothing else required.

I've been using www.kitschcollars.com for years. Great collars and coats.
I've had Saluki for nearly 30 years. Welcome to the club 🤗

Clothes?! Isn’t that why they have fur?

RavenPie · 20/02/2026 19:45

Spudsdogcoats on Etsy is good

CousinBette · 20/02/2026 19:48

Dogs don’t wear clothes. Maybe a dog coat in extremely cold weather. That’s it.

Lemonfrost · 20/02/2026 19:50

Try WidgetsWardrobe on Facebook

RudolphRNR · 20/02/2026 19:55

Mine is a greyhound. He really does need clothes in winter, he feels the cold! Most sighthounds do need an extra layer in winter. We have bought from Houndtees (as per post above) and also Blas & Co who also do whippet sizes.

MyGirlDaisy · 20/02/2026 19:56

My Saluki Lurcher has a selection of coats and suits from Blizzard Coats and Equafleece. He has pjs that came from one of the Lurcher rescues but not sure they still have a shop. He has a Fishtail Collar and 3 point Dry Dogs Harness and I use a double ended lead. @CMOTDibbler gives great advice on never using an extendable or long lead. I spend more on the dogs wardrobe than my own! Congratulations on your new family member- enjoy.

RudolphRNR · 20/02/2026 19:58

@onlyoneoftheregimentinstep Most sighthounds don’t have a lot of fur nor body fat to keep them warm. They are a chilly breed who benefit from an extra layer.

Kwamitiki · 20/02/2026 20:05

Thanks for all.of the suggestions- keep them coming! We are so excited that she will be joining our family, as we have been waiting for the right dog. She's sweet natured and really curious- we don't really know much more than that, as the rescue didn't have much information due to the way she came to them.

You can tell those who know sighthounds vs those who don't on this thread 🤣

She's a dainty thing with very little fat, and no real fur to speak of. They took off her coat briefly so we could look at her, and the poor thing was shivering within a minute or so. She definitely needs coats/jumpers/PJs!

Greyhounds are the only type of dog that do need a layer - they feel the heat and cold in extremes

they don’t have much fur - more like a seal skin layer

Edited

I found mine stopped trying to get into bed with me at night once they had vests on and were warm enough

'You can tell those who know sighthounds vs those who don't on this thread'. How do you know, you've never owned one? 🙄

S0j0urn4r · 20/02/2026 22:47

Saluki like to nest. Mine have several blankets so they can arrange everything to their own particular standards 😂

daffodilandtulip · 20/02/2026 22:52

Lol at all the people saying dogs don’t need clothes. Clearly never been glared at by a shivering skinny sighthound, who will refuse to do ANYTHING once the temperature drops a degree or two.

daffodilandtulip · 20/02/2026 22:54

Check out nest beds or sleeping bag beds as well. Mine loves to burrow herself into one of those when it’s cold.

JustOnePersonNotAnOctopus · 20/02/2026 23:01

We have a Saluki Lurcher. We used to put him in PJs if the temp was going to be much below 0 overnight, but now we have a heat pump and he’s very comfortable! We do have a lined raincoat for wet weather/really cold days when it’s below 5 or so.

They don’t particularly need or, more importantly, enjoy clothes. We are in SE England.

JustOnePersonNotAnOctopus · 20/02/2026 23:02

He does have a stack of three beds for some reason though. 😂
