Labrador and itchy ears!

CHATTY264 · 17/02/2026 07:13

Please help my and my 3 year old Labrador. She always has itchy ears. Not her skin only her ears. She is constantly shaking her head and flapping her ears. Itching them so much to the point she breaks the skin and bleeds.
they don’t look sore and inflamed inside, they look more brown and dirty.

I have tried everything over the years. Many different cleaning solutions from the vets, many different antibiotics ointment from the vets, she’s even had her ears deep cleaned while she was put to sleep.

I’ve also done my own research and tried thronet powder, puainta cleaner.
cleaning them daily which I was told could be making it worse so changed it to every few days, tried just once a week. All these thing helps for a few days - a week then stop helping. Now they are worse than ever and I don’t know what to do for my poor girl.

I’ve also changed her food a few times currently on skinners which is good for dogs with sensitivities/allergies.

Has anyone been through similar and found something that works??
the vets just keep taking swabs and giving me different treatments the last one was an antibiotic liquid and she had a reaction to it.

thank you so much

Have you tried removing chicken from her diet?

There is the option of surgery to widen the
ear canal.

My dog has this. We clean her ears every few days with solution like Bugalugs. Or the vet will put her to sleep and do it if she's getting another procedure done at the same time.

No advice just solidarity. It horrible to see them scratching away like that. Looks painful.

My dog had this for years. Eventually he had an ear flush under general anesthetic and he has never scratched or shaken since, 3 years later. Worth looking into.

We had this until very recently, over and over. In the end a new vet gave him a 2 week course of steroids and antibiotics, along with ear drops and ear cleaner again. And he now has a steroid prescription ear spray to use twice a week. For the first time in 8 years, his ears are clean and not bothering him. 5 months sorted so far. Spray is to use for life I think.

I agree with a PP and look to exclude chicken from her diet. My Lab, now 4, had specific itchy areas and after he moved to chicken-free food it stopped. He's currently on Skinners salmon and rice kibble.

You could try adding Yumega ‘itching dog’ oil . It worked wonders for my lab and gave him a beautiful coat.
But agree - avoid chicken. My dog didn’t do well on skinners , but something simple like Burns Pork and Potato or Chappie are also worth looking at. Not fancy but the6 are still around for a reason.

How funny today I’ve just ordered the skinners salmon and grain free food
double the price of the normal one we get but will be worth it if it solves our problem

Thank you I’ll order this. Was it just used as a treatment and then you stopped or do you use it all the time as a preventative ??

We had this. It was a yeast issue. Switched to raw food and cut out chicken and then beef too. All cleared up. A vet dermatologist said chicken is the most common allergen.

labradorservant · 17/02/2026 22:18

My lab has had many ear infections. Vet suggestion she try an insect based diet! There is insect based foods out there. She is not a frog yet, so I decided to remove chicken for starters. No infections since so that’s a good place to start.

We use it as and when required.
1ml in each ear (though it seems to be the right one that causes most problems)
Usually 2 treatments a few days apart works.
You have to get it through your vet, direct or through prescription.
Hope it works as well for you as it has done for us.

forgotactually · 18/02/2026 15:27

We usually have to use it maybe every 4 months
