How to keep our greyhound safe and comfortable in car

Our new female greyhound, retired racer, arrives next week. Not had a dog this size before and needing advice on what we need to keep her safe and comfortable in the car. It'll be mostly trips of less than 30 mins

If you use a crate make sure they can stand up in it

my greyhound just used to sit on back seats - you can use a seatbelt click in lead

in my experience they don’t really leap around a lot

She won't be in a crate - just on back seat FishFingerSandwichs

Some of them get extremely stressed in cars (they associate it with being rehomed again), just a gentle warning.

then seatbelt lead - comfy cover and shades for windows

I would use a clip that goes round the headrest and attach it to a harness. And get a hammock to cover the seats.

I found with the clips that go into the seat belt receivers, my dog would stand on the button and release himself as I was driving along.

Yes true!

Get a hammock seconded. It'll save your car seats and give her plenty of space to stretch out. You can get ones with a hard base from DryDogs. I don't have one with a hard base but I block the foot wells with bags of old clothes to make it more supportive which is another option.

we have a belt that goes around the headrests and clips to their harness. our other grey has a big sofa bed in the boot and rides around like a king, but he would get battered in a crash so it does worry me. they're too big for the secure crates i see other dogs in.

all of my greyhounds (3) have absolutely loved the car and prefer it to walking (which they also love). a roadtrip is the best thing ever, especially if it has a beach at the end. they are also in tune with the satnav and seem to know when we're arriving and ramp up the excited whining.

Enjoy your new greyhound life!

I absolutely recommend a hammock for the back seat. They clip around the headrests so are easy to put in and take out. For ours, we put the hammock in and then a cosy blanket and our greyhound loves it. Congratulations on your upcoming new arrival!
(we prefer to say rescued not retired)
