Photo of the silly sod for reference.
we had had a big flare up. He is mostly better but I need to get in front of this. He can’t tolerate Arthrocam it made him vomit and he was scary bombed out. He is just on yumove and a 1/4 of a paracetamol now and then.
vet has said no to cbd citing lack of research.
He is struggling with morning poos now and holding his tal up so I think it’s hurting his spine now too.
Glucosamine? A different supplement?
He is 10 now. We do a 25 minute walk early in the morning that he enjoys lots and he has sardines every other day. Natures Way kibble the rest of the time as he is grain free and has been since puppy days.

He has a bed in every room and we put runners down on all the hard floors. I can’t stop him going up the stairs or jumping on the beds though he either wants to or he doesn’t and he has been very keen since we ditched the Arthrocam.
Any ideas? He is a lovely cuddly dog. Thank you!

The Canine Arthritis Management website has lots of useful advice. You need to give any pain relief regularly, not just now and then. There are lots of different pain relief meds so arm youself with a list from CAM site (nothing with -cam!) and get your vet to come up with a proper plan. If they won't I would look to change vet.

My old husky had arthritis in one of her hips. Started giving her 1 cod liver oil capsule a day. Improved massively over just a month. She was a different dog. She was 7 when this started. Continued with the daily cod liver oil & never had any more problems with arthritis until she died aged 14.5yrs.

@Jamfirstest Bog standard human. Bought it from Tesco I think.

noctilucentcloud · 01/02/2026 16:09

Definitely back to the vet, my dog wasn't able to take arthrocam and had various other pain relievers.

Rhythmisadancer · 01/02/2026 16:17

my old boy had metacam from the vet which worked wonders for a couple of years, and then when he started to struggle again they gave him something that was an injection every 6 weeks, and that really helped as well. The vet said that there is a lot of medicine available which is a long way off being approved for humans, but dogs can have it, so it's actually easier to get them some relief than it is for us!

SarahWoodWould · 01/02/2026 16:20

Our elderly lab is on daily Metacam prescribed from the vet plus max dose YuMove. We also have gabapentin in the house for when he has a bad flare up.

SpanielsGalore · 01/02/2026 17:46

Your vet should have offered you an alternative form of pain relief. A quarter of Paracetamol every now and then isn't going to help.

My 10 year old springer has Arthrocam, Gabapentin and Paracetamol daily. She also has a monthly ketamine injection and electroacupuncture.

I would ask for a referral to a pain specialist.

Another vote for Canine Arthritis Management (CAM) brilliant resource
sorry your silly sod is having a flare up 🩷

GingerRuby · 01/02/2026 22:13

Acupuncture has been fantastic for my arthritic Goldie, she is also on twice daily paracetamol and Yumove Max Strength.

Moanycowbag · 02/02/2026 19:02

My creaky but not too creaky dog has Yumove and she has been prescribed Carprieve as she doesn't tolerate Metacam, it has helped as after a good walk and a nap she would wake up very stiff, but she is back to her almost bouncy self, she is a nearly 12 year old slightly portly Cav x

Buildingthefuture · 02/02/2026 19:08

Cartrophen, gabapentin and hydrotherapy gave my big old boy an additional two very good years.

Jamfirstest · 03/02/2026 11:51

@Moanycowbagthis is exactly what I need to achieve thank you

vets asap

We initially used Yumove Advance, then added in Paracetamol and eventually Librela injections as our boy needed them. We also had gabapentin for flare ups, but we were very aware of changes and responded with altering the medication as he needed it. Hydrotherapy also worked well to keep his joints flexible and moving.

Imgoingtobefree · 03/02/2026 12:52

It’s about 10 years ago but my old girl had metacam and tramadol. From memory she wasn’t on both of them continuously, but generally one or the other with a little overlap now and then for flare ups. Metacam could upset her digestion. Not sure if this would be standard practice now?

However I think the thing that also made a big difference was doggie massage which she just loved. I taught myself via YouTube, and gave her massages everyday for her joints just when she was laying next to me. It’s really just a form of firmer stroking, so you can do it everytime you give her a cuddle.

Hi lovely mners. Just want to say a huge thank you. My boy has been on the cod liver oil for 3 weeks and I can see the difference it’s really good.
Not the point of it but his coat looks fabulous really glossy and vibrant!
he is back to his usual spaniel self. We haven’t had a yelp for weeks now with pain.
I ended up soaking his kibble as he was struggling to toilet comfortably and that’s fixed it pretty much instantly. Also it takes him ages to hoover up the soaked kibble out of his slow feeder and he seems to really enjoy that.
he is so much better he has managed an hour walk which I never thought we would get back.
we have a pain clinic appointment this week for meds review but I’m fairly confident the vet will say he doesn’t need them.
i was having kittens about him going to kennels at Easter and I put off booking holiday because I thought he wasn’t well enough but he’s been fine for ages now.
he’s so much better he’s back to pulling on the lead like a tank and being a bit of a pain!! How I longed for that back in jan!!
