Puppy biting

had our French bulldog puppy three weeks, she’s 13 weeks old. Not my first rodeo, had a French bulldog that we had to have put down just before Christmas (age 14) and have had bullmastiffs, french mastiff and a staffy, parents had Rottweilers. I’m not sure if I’m not remembering it but the biting is next level and I’m not sure how to handle it, it like properly launching herself at me, breaking the skin. Things I have done (I read not to be shouting, but to make a noise, like a kissing noise to distract and the reward if they stop) the kissing noise works, but then she goes back to biting, at times I have had to resort to the crate, which I don’t want to make an punishment place. I am prioritising regular sleep to make sure she’s not overtired. I am at a bit of a loss if I’m doing the right things.

Some puppies are worse than others. My 4 year old was vile and frequently had me in tears. I was covered in cuts and my clothes were ripped. My 1 year old only had two time outs.

I kept toys handy to try to shove in their mouths instead of my limbs. I know people swear by frozen carrots too, but mine wouldn't touch them.

Do you have a stair gate? I put my puppy the other side of the gate for a few seconds time out if they got really bad. You could do that, so the crate doesn't become seen as a punishment.

Good luck. They do get better eventually.

Coffeeishot · 30/01/2026 11:28

She is more than likely tired where does she sleep ? Put her for a nap.

Coffeeishot · 30/01/2026 11:30

Is her bed the crate it is fine to put her there it isn't punishment.but if you don't think she is tired put a toy in her way every time, try and not make too much noise because any attention is still attention for her.

Mollymoo56 · 30/01/2026 11:44

I’m doing the placing something else in her mouth, that does work for a while. Her bed is the crate, I had a pen but I could see she would jump it quite quickly. I’m trying as much enrichment feeding as I can think of, just tried the muffin tin. I’m hoping it’ll get better in a week when she’s allowed out. The only really safe place for her is the crate.

Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy experience was horrific. Was very painful, bleeding all the time, bruised if she bit through clothing. It was hell. I looked like I’d been attacked by a thorn bush. All I can is it does eventually stop! I think about 7 months for us. Now she nibbles gently if over tired but that leaves no injury. Everytime I would say a firm “no” and try and redirect but she had the attention span of a goldfish at that age so would be back biting again straight away. Good luck. They’re a delight once they stop.

Morepositivemum · 30/01/2026 12:00

As above, a toy/ teddy in the mouth every time and after a while she’ll go to pick it up when she feels like mouthing.

Morepositivemum · 30/01/2026 12:01

Ps our dog stopped at one and a half years really suddenly!!

Sometimes they need to learn to do nothing i think. she sounds perky 😀 so maybe she is overstimulated,

im really prioritising sleeping, she sleeps well at night 10-6/7 I get up during the night to take her out if I hear her up. Then two hours 8.30-10.30 then another two hours 12/1-2 a nap at teatime, then she pretty much sleeps all evening.

Is that just in her crate? I’ve limited the amount of house she has free roam on, and her toys so there’s just a couple of different types

Thanks, it’s good to know that I’m not alone and hopefully there is an end to it.

We have a 17 week puppy and have found a Petstages Dogwood Stick an absolute god send for him to chew on, you can get them on Amazon, Pets at Home, etc. DH laughed like hell that I’d bought something that looked like a stick and tasted like a stick but he chews on it for ages and there’s no worry of splinters.
We also soaked rope toys, tea towels, etc in water and then froze, they are good for soothing sore gums. Cold carrots rather than frozen seemed to work better for us.
Whilst he is obviously still nips and bites it has dropped drastically since we got the sticks and we don’t tend to use the other methods at all now.
Also, do you use an indoor long line for your pup? We’ve found it an essential item for stopping him going where he shouldn’t quickly, grabbing when he’s making a run for it and it comes in handy at holding back when he’s being overly bitey or jumping up

I’ll be trying these, thanks.
I have got a long line, but I’m limiting her movement with doors closed and making the area puppy safe.

My puppy's 18 weeks old and has, in the last week or 2, stopped the incessant biting. She still bites but it's more predictable and I can stop it more easily. She has more control over herself. I bought all the chews - even the revolting ones! That helped somewhat. It's not a stage I want to go through again!!
