Sizable rescue dog, not at all housetrained, is coming to us soon. Accept there will be accidents but want to give our carpet the best chance of survival so want to protect it in some way. Some sort of sheeting from a DIY store? Any ideas? Or links?

Bless you!

How about a plastic ground sheet and some cheap s/h rugs?

good luck! Enjoy 🤩

Do you have a room with washable flooring? If so I woud keep the dog in that room for a few days until they get the idea of house training and settle in a bit

We put down some cheap off cuts of Lino from our local floor shop

BiteyShark · 24/01/2026 00:21

I used cheap Lino off cuts in rooms that needed protecting.

If its a male, have a look at belly bands!

Roll and stroll. Its what workmen often use to avoid ruining your carpets

Boy or girl?
you could use plastic sheets & washable Incontinence pads for the bed.
But really, the best cause of action would be to take doggo out every hour plus after sleeping, feeding & play. When he goes lots of phrase, a treat and introduce a cue word so they learn to go on command.

Is it not housetrained because it’s been kennelled/outside? Because if so I’ve done it a few times and honestly, I wouldn’t bother covering your carpet.

It’s not like housetraining a puppy where they have constant accidents, they have the control already just need to learn to go outside and they get it so much quicker than puppies do too.

Appreciate your replies and tabulahrasa thats really encouraging

Carpet wrap. Decorators use it. Like a giant roll of sellotape.

I’d just keep the dog in the room with the washable floor, as long as there’s a comfy place to lay down and you’re in there as well they’ll be happy until the dog has got the hang of going outside.
