My 7 yo lab came off librella around 6 months ago after seeing a pain management specialist who advised this has had new research and best for him not to be on it any more - he was having monthly injections and I think they worked well along with hydro.
he had bloods done to check all ok after finishing librella and is now ok new regime which includes previcox and memantine in AM along with Antinol supplements and meantime at night.
wondered if anyone else has changed from librella and if so what arthritis treatment they are having now. Thanks

We are in the same situation as you .
Our 12 year old boy had his last Librela in August after 2 years of injections.
He is on green lipped muscle powder , gabapentin ,paracetamol ,Amantadine and metacam .
he also sees a holistic vet every six weeks and she gives a variety of herbs to add to his food .
its so hard isn’t it , im sorry that your lab is so young to have arthritis.

Thanks @billhubbard he’s had in in his elbow did last 3 years and now his paws stems from an op he had on his elbow when he was 1 and I think at the time his love of balls !
he’s happy in himself and trots around the park just with a limp but interested in others meds as not so sure memantine does that much. What seems to loosen it best is hydro but it’s a long drive away and insurance only covers £750 per year for this kind of therapy so it’s a lot to supplement.
We changed from yu move senior plus to Antinol not sure if that’s better or not ?

Trouble is with most treatments/medicines they take so long to kick in that you need to spend so much time and money to find out it doesn’t help .
At least with my holistic vet she is a fully qualified vet as well as doing complementary therapy so sees a lot of similar problems and can advise what she thinks actually work .
she also does acupuncture which does help and he also does hydrotherapy.
Have you thought about acupuncture?
we have the added problem of him having an operation for IVDD two years ago which makes him weaker on his back legs which means the arthritis in his front legs is worse due to the extra pressure on the them .
Did you find Antinol made much difference ?
The whole Librela thing is a nightmare isn’t it , reading some of the story’s of dogs dying is terrible.

How long has he been on memantine? I think it takes 3 months-ish to work as a general rule. I am surprised the specialist took him off librela if it was working. What was the new research? Having said that, I know librela is not a miracle drug - mine didn't respond noticeably to it - and then there's the side effects.
Mine is now on gabapentin, paracetamol and galliprant.
She has had acupuncture which I think helped but that vet doesn't work locally much and mine doesn't travel so well.
We are off to see a chiropractor in case that can help.
Loads of additional supplements you can use although not sure how much good they would do. And heat pads. And I try to keep her exercise as low impact as I can. They are a worry!

My old boy had ketamine injections monthly which really helped his pain control, acupuncture (can only be done by a vet, he loved it and you could see the relaxation), and Mc Timoney chiropractic to keep him aligned. He couldn’t have metacam as he was on long term steroids, but did have paracetamol

SpanielsGalore · 16/01/2026 11:21

I haven't tried librella. But my 10.5 year old springer has Metacam, Gabapentin and Paracetamol daily. Then she has monthly injections of ketamine and electroacupuncture. She also benefitted from seeing a physiotherapist for laser therapy and general advice on managing her condition.

K-laser made a massive difference to our old boy.

We used full spectrum cbd oil along with previcox and amantadine when our old fella had an adverse reaction to librella ,
it helped him .

2Pandora · 21/01/2026 12:46

Oh yes and another vote for laser treatment

Jamfirstest · 21/01/2026 16:01

Joining as my cockers front leg arthritis has flared. He never need pain relief before and he has reacted so badly to even metacam so joining for ideas really.
he is on yumove only what else can I give him?

tonyhawks23 · 21/01/2026 20:52

Yes I was going to say laser and acupuncture

Weight loss if he’s not already lean makes a massive difference to the need for pain killers
