Pet insurance, check the small print

So after my older dog was poorly and had an emergency vet trip I’ve had the claim to the insurance approved. I knew I’d have to pay the excess but assumed as she has 7k worth of cover they’d pay the rest. Well they haven’t.

In the small print there’s a limit for everything. A limit for a consultation fee, limit for a blood test fee, limit for a hospital admission. We went over in so many sections. I’ve had to pay a bit under £800. They’ve paid a bit more than £800.

definitely worth bearing in mind when buying insurance. They’re possibly all similar but guess some may be better than others

You're completely missing my point, and for that reason I'm out.

I don't see how she's missing the point. Charging higher prices because some places are more expensive is surely only fair if they actually pay out those higher prices. If wherever you are in the country they only pay out £100 for overnight nursing care and treatment in vet hospital (an amount that sounds ridiculously low to me) there's no reason for them to charge higher prices in more expensive areas

Exactly. If they are paying out the same amount, they should be charging the same amount.
I'm not arguing a Great Dane should be the same as a Yorkshire terrier. Or a 12 year old dog the same price as a 2 year old.

Thank you for this thread @NorwichMom

I'm looking at pet insurance at the moment and this is something to take into account. Grr... I hate the small print in insurance.

Really recommend looking at LV. They are reasonable prices and pay out without all the excuses. I have had a lot paid out in the last 2 years.

I always see petplan recommended but LV were far cheaper and their service is excellent. I have car and pet insurance with them and recently switched home insurance to them too as I know they are good to deal with.

I’d say don’t touch animal friends with a barge pole. Certainly the vet receptionist pulled a face when I said I was insured with them and straight away said they won’t pay everything.

Had a text from the mergency vets, I owe more money. When the email from animal friends said £750 was payable I read it that that’s how much was payable by me. Turns out that’s how much they’re paying. So I have had to pay £950 in total.

so iv fluids for diarrhoea has cost me just under 1k even though insured. It’s eye opening how bad it can be.

All the way through this thread (I’ve just read from beginning to end) … is adverts for Animal Friends !!
We’re with PetPlan, did think about changing something cheaper when I took on my boy, sure glad I didn’t. So far- they’ve been great 👍
@NorwichMomhope your pup on the mend, it’s horrible when they’re poorly 💗
