Pup pooping all evening!

My 13 week old pup just poops all evening! He is fine during the day, 3-4 poops either in the garden or when out on walks. But, after his evening meal at 5, he seems to poop non stop, and in the house too! We can go out for a walk , no poop but 5 minutes after we get back, off he goes. Out in the garden, no poop, back in the house, poop! He can poop and then again 10 minutes late. One evening, I counted 9 poops between 5 and bedtime!

any ideas?

He’s still very young, tiny tummy so yes lots of poo is normal, we soon went from 4 meals a day to 3 and no food after last meal at 5pm, other than a biscuit at bedtime. You don’t say what breed you have, but once my border collie boy had grown bigger and had a bigger tummy, he was able to hold it longer. What helped us was given a special treat of chicken very single time he went to toilet outside, soon he cottoned on that he would get a treat for doing so. It takes time and patience to get a dog fully toilet trained, but it’s so worth the extra effort you put in now, as much as it seems a pain. We still had the occasional overnight accident and a case of diarrhoea, which didn’t help.

He’s a cairn terrier, so very small still! He’s on 3 meals a day and nothing after 5, treats for pooping outside( although I will try using chicken just for that) , and LOTS of walks and time outside. He’s just so good the rest of the day and then non stop all evening!

I would feed him 4 times to see how he goes don't up his food spread it out, you also might be feeding him too much,

Coffeeishot · 13/01/2026 08:22

He might also be intolerant of chicken

jamandcustard · 13/01/2026 10:01

Are his poos normal? I wonder if you’re over-feeding him or he has an intolerance to something.

Cairneyes · 13/01/2026 10:22

Quite runny. I will try cutting down on the amount I give him, my last dog was a spaniel and ate everything in sight, I think I’m not in cairn mode yet!

It sounds like his food doesn't agree with him. I'd look at changing it and avoid chicken incase he is intolerant to it.

Coffeeishot · 13/01/2026 10:42

Yeah if it is runny something isn't agreeing, it might just be as simple as over feeding, that includes treats and chicken,

My Labrador did this (but never in the house), a dozen poos a day, quite soft and difficult to pick up cleanly. Turned out he was sensitive to chicken. Since he's been on a fish-based diet he's been fine.

I cut back on the amount of kibble he had for tea ( and changed his treats to beef) and seemed much better, only one poop in the house and the rest on walks!

That sounds like you are going in the right direction, it might take a few days for his bowels to calm down, obvioulsly keep an eye him.
