Crate or carrier for car - any recommendations?

We brought an 8 week old Lab puppy home yesterday. We’re crate training her at home and so far, so good, but we need a way of transporting her in the car. We have a Honda Jazz and a camper van and she’ll be travelling in both. I think she’s a bit little just to be clipped in at the moment.
What are your recommendations- hard or soft? Any particular brands?

We use a Thule, it’s crash tested and a hard frame so the safest option but expensive!

We have a car harness which clips into the seatbelt fixture. It allows him to be in the back seat near us. We also have a seat cover like a hammock between the back and front seats so its like being clipped into a very big bed. We've used the same system from 8 weeks to 4 years just adapting the harness and our lab travels very happily in the car.
He lies across the seat with his nose between the front seats snoring happily.

I guess a full grown lab in a Honda Jazz is basically going to take up the entirety of wherever you put her. Boot or backseat

I would try and find a crash tested crate to fit in your boot, it will take up all the boot space but so would the dog without the crate so...

It also has the added benefitn of just bundling the mucky muddy wet dog into their business class cabin crate and not soiling the entire car and everything in it!

ETA - I use a TransK9 crate

I love Normy’s set up but it wouldn’t work in the camper van. Crate is probably best if we want to be able to interchange between the two vehicles but I guess we could have a different system in each.

The crates are pretty expensive though so best if you can find one that you can move between the vehicles.

I used to let mine drive! But seriously, he had a crash tested harness in the car as my little smart car doesn’t really have a boot. And a crate in the camper van.

If you try and crate her in the car you're going to lose all your boot space. I have a small car (Hyundai i10) and can't even comfortably fit a full grown lab in there.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 15/01/2026 20:15

Yes that’s what I’m worried about. I think we’re going to need two systems.

I would put her on the backseat with a harness and seat cover in the car (as you can then put things in the footwell plus you have your whole boot free). In the camper you can install a crate.

I walk a male labrador and although he can technically fit in the boot of my car, I’d never travel with him that way as he would be so cramped and uncomfortable. He lies across the back seat with a harness and seatbelt and sprawls out instead!
