Scrumbles toy breed and puppy food.

We tried a few different brands, and Scrumbles is the one they seem to prefer.

Justwingingit2005 · 11/01/2026 12:08

I've tried every small dog dry food. The only one my dog will eat (he's a parson terrier) is tesco small dog. Anything else he turns his nose up and gives me the side eye.

Whitesidetable · 11/01/2026 12:10

Tesco small dog here too. I’ve tried loads but this is his favourite.

Mine is an 8kg poodle cross. I used the All About Dog food site to get some ideas. I buy Gentle dog kibble, the small pellet sized one, online and mix with some naturo. My dog will then meticulously pick out and eat the naturo first, and only eat the Gentle dog food as a last resort!

She also has wet food morning and night.

PuppyTroubleAgain · 11/01/2026 16:10

Thanks all. His former owner gave us Scrumbles for him, among a few other dried foods. I wasn’t sure if the kibble size might be too small for him as an adult though he is a small dog(Maltese x Shih tzu)
He eats some of the Scrumbles but he doesn’t seem overly enthused about them but he has only been here for a few days so it’s difficult to tell what he prefers.

My Patterdale has Bakers small dog. She tends to pick the nice lumps out and leave the rest though. But she's a little sod anyway.

This is the website I mentioned up thread. It helped me narrow down brands to try. You can filter for just kibble, from certain countries or just a specific brand. I really don't know how accurate their scoring etc is, but some of the ratings for common, supermarket brands are dreadful! If you do change kibble, just do it slowly.

Have you had a small dog before?

We accidentally made our chihuahua fat when we first got her, because we were feeding her the amount we thought she should be eating. When the vet weighed out how much she should eat to maintain a healthy weight, I couldn't believe how little food it was. It was 1/10 of how much I had been feeding her/expecting her to eat.

I'd keep an eye on his weight, and if he's maintaining a healthy weight, the little he is eating is likely the right amount.

Royal Canin small dog food.

Kendodd · 11/01/2026 16:28

I used to have a parsons JR, lived to 18 on Tescos cheapest dog food.

Zippedydodah · 11/01/2026 16:29

Fish4Dogs small kibble.

My dogs have wet food once a day and Morrisons small dog food for their other meal. They are 6 years old and they have had it since they turned 2. Up until then they had puppy food.

Usernamenotfound1 · 11/01/2026 16:29

Mine eats the cat food 🤷‍♀️

won’t eat dog biscuits.

Kendodd · 11/01/2026 16:30

Oh, and my dog was a grazer not a scoffer so food always available. She never got overweight (unlike me).

Frequency · 11/01/2026 16:35

Ours graze on dry food but will scoff wet or raw food. We started the chihuahua on raw food, but now there are 4 of them, the cost and effort outweigh the benefits, so they get Scrumbles.

We did also try Millie's Wolfheart, Fish4Dogs, and BlueBuffalo before settling on Scrumbles.

Yes I’ve had 2 before but Maltese/Shih Tzu are new to me. My last small dog was built like an athlete and had a considerable appetite at times but she was very good at self regulating. Once she’d had enough she’d stop eating. It didn’t matter how special the food or treat was, how much she adored it. She’d stop immediately once she was satisfied and would leave the rest.(I wish that I had her willpower.)

He’s very enthusiastic about his wet food. The dry food less so but I’ll try another brand while keeping his weight in mind because I doubt that he’d self regulate as my last girl did. I have another, larger, dog too and the new boy is very interested in his food but he doesn’t get that as it isn’t suitable for him.

Arden Grange mini adult - just a small handful morning and evening (no water) for our mini dachshund. It is always gone in about 5 seconds (she is very food motivated!), and the vet recently complimented her on her excellent weight/physique so it is obviously suiting her…

Itsrainingloadshere · 11/01/2026 17:39

Lily’s Kitchen for my papillon, they do a small breed version of the dry food.

jaundicedoutlook · 12/01/2026 17:27

Forthglade cold pressed chicken. Also use Butternut for wet food.

To be honest, ours would eat anything, including the cat’s food and anything edible that isn’t immediately picked up off the floor.

MagicSpring · 12/01/2026 17:32

Your dog restricts itself to edible items??
