Is -5 too cold for a dog walk?

9 year old spaniel.

Some arthritis but not flaring atm.

He loves his walks and will be sad to not go … but it will be -5 where I am tomorrow. Wind chill factor takes it to -7. I can’t go any other time so it’s -5 or not at all. I don’t have a coat for him as he tears them off as soon as they’re on!

WWYD?

My WCS age 9 with arthritis has not slowed at all in this weather. I just wipe his paws and put a drying coat on him at the end so he doesn’t feel cold in the car on the way home.

I’m a dog walker and the only reason I’ve cancelled walks in these temperatures is because I can’t physically get to clients houses due to the ice.

All the dogs love the snow and will happily zoom about and play for ages.

Saint Bernard , yes she's out walking in very cold weather conditions. Not a big deal for her!

We have working dogs. They will let you know if it’s too cold but I would be incredibly shocked if a spaniel said they didn’t want a walk in the cold! I was out with ours this morning doing some training in -5, absolutely fine. No coats etc.
the considerations that might alter that are of course breeds with very short coats and low body fat such as greyhounds, then I would definitely put layers on them but even so they might still enjoy a walk out! If they are off the lead they will be keeping themselves warm.

We were out at 8am today -5. Our daft WCS never stayed still and definitely wasn’t cold 😆

3 working dogs here (one with mild arthritis too) and nope, -5 and snow is absolutely fine for them. They probably love it more than any other weather.

And I wouldn't worry about coats. Most dogs have a far better natural coat to keep them warm than we could dream of!
