Springer pulls on lead

Jinglejinglejingle7 · 01/01/2026 17:11

2 year old Springer spaniel pulls on the lead constantly. Its actually getting hard to walk him on lead. Hes great off lead and checks in all the time. So we've tried Halti, harnesses, treats, stopping, change direction, did a class with trainer.(will keep up tecnique) watched lots, been given lots of advice etc thats contradicting and wanted to know if anyone has real life experience of similar issue?

How successful are the techniques your trainer has given you?
If it's a work in progress even if tiny steps keep going. Loose leash walking takes a lot of time and consistency.

Something that might help it along a bit quicker could be a simple walk to heel command- off lead to start with. Have a clear start end to the exercise likea sit & release word. Do a few steps, slowly increasing time & distance. Once ddog can do a decent distance, try it with the lead on - maybe even just trailing on the ground to avoid tension.

Yes I have - my Springer is now 4 and most of time I can get him to walk relatively ok. No amount of haltis/harnesses worked for him and no quick fixes either I’m afraid…….

My advice would be stick rigidly to what the trainer has advised you to do and just persevere and be patient, it can take them weeks/months/years but it will start to get easier.

I still practice with mine regularly, I still need to reset him on walks (especially first walk of the day when he’s so excited) and I still need to frequently cue and reward him if we’re walking for more than about 5 minutes. He’s never going to be a dog that is comfortable on a lead but we manage and like you he’s so fab off lead that the portion of our walks on lead are minimal anyway.

He does walk to heel significantly better off lead though 😂

My cocker sounds similar to your dog @Domino211. They are so scent driven that it is hard to keep them from pulling to constantly get to the next scent - especially on bin day when he can smell all the fox trails!
Consistency, cues, rewards and engagement have all helped but he is not a dog who will just trot along beside me automatically - I have to be clear what I want as we leave the house and that we are working right now.
He's far far better after a good sniffy offlead walk so I did a lot of our practicing then in the earlier days as he would be much calmer and able to focus. Trying to train before a walk was like talking to a brick wall Grin

We worked with a trainer to get our cocker spaniel to walk to heel. We taught her to sit automatically every time we stopped or she pulled. We literally just stopped and waited for her to sit herself beside us. It took forever and she walks beautifully.
However, she is a total knob off-lead and won’t come back! Gets so stimulated by everything that she loses her mind! Can’t seem to train her to do that!

@AwkwardPaws27 absolutely, all our lead training is done post run, if I tired before I think we’d manage about 2m at best 😂

@Jinglejinglejingle7get a Halti best thing ever

Maryberrysbouffant · 01/01/2026 22:29

you say you tried a halti, have you tried a figure of 8 slip lead?

I looked after a lab not long ago who on the normal lead pulled like a train but with the figure of 8 trotted along like an angel.

Jinglejinglejingle7 · 02/01/2026 09:17

Thanks all. No haven't tried the figure of 8 - I've resisted slip leads etc but I think i may try the halti 8.
Our training involved building eye cobtact, so getting him to look up at me- reward with treat & 'yes' when he did-me walk backwards him follow. Does this great .... off lead! As soon as harness on or i turn to move forwards he's off/distracted pulling.
