We adopted a 4 year old 3 weeks ago
she was crate trained , which suits us ( we visit relatives a lot and feel it wd suit when we are in new places as its her consistent place)
first few nites she cried
after that she went in , with a treat and the words good bed
over the last week , when in from her last walk she has shot upstairs wanting to be on our bed and had to be placed in crate ( stiff , resistant) but settled.
she also tried get out of crate bf door shut and jump on sofa
she has definitely been crate trained with cover overnite , but does Not go in it during day. We are gradually leaving her in the room its in .ut was uses at night only previous owner.

when we adopted her we know she was scared of fireworks.last night i took her to bed with me and held her during the fireworks.
I accidentally fell asleep as v tired as recovery from flu and woke up early hrs to find her snuggling me .
i didnt take her down to crate , which i now regret.
it was lovely but dont want lomg term.
so is it fair to re intro to crate? Or are we now done fot??
want to be fair to her. She seems ok in it , just not her
preference!! She loves human contact and cuddles all nite on sofa.
Thanks - am so tired - I would just appreciate help.
i am totally torn as it was so sweet , but the crate waa so useful and fits out life … eeek

She doesn't need a coat.
It's normal for dogs to be scared of fireworks.

Honestly, you need to take a BIG deep breath and relax.

thank you

re coats
https://www.bellaandduke.com/dogs/expert-advice/dog-behaviour/do-dogs-need-coats-in-winter/

i was reading this article that said they need them below certain degrees.
she was shivering the other day am pretty sure .
I do appreciate that some thing are human ified! And some people things are more for humans than dogs! 😂… but several articles suggest they need coats below certain temperatures.
I wish i had more confidence sometimes… how do you know they dont need coats .?

i will , thank you ! i just didn’t want to ‘ undo ‘ the crate training - out prev dog slept with me or the run of the house,, but as she got older , with cognitive decline- it was awful as she would wet the bed ot wander around and crash into things - id never want to see that again it was so sad- but in the daytime, right up to evening she was so happy and had constant love and company - but the nocturnal stuff was hard and the vet cdnt suggest any medication.

Firstly, I would take anything the previous owner told you with a pinch of salt. People lie. Especially people who want rid of their dog there and then and don't allow time for several meet and greets before rehoming.

It doesn't sound like she likes the crate if you are having to force her into it. You could try leaving her on the sofa and see how it goes. My foster dog cried, so she had to come into the bedroom. She has her own bed and has a dog guard up around it. (Mainly to stop the puppy annoying her during the night.)

I wouldn't persist with a crate incase of cognitive decline. My first dog slept in a crate and happily went into it during the day. But when he got dementia, he became very distressed in it and had to come into the bedroom instead.

Re coats - it depends on the breed and the type of walk. I have spaniels that keep warm by running none stop. But they do shiver after a walk, so have jumpers to put on afterwards. One had surgery and could only do short on lead walks, so she wore a coat then. I think thin skinned dog breeds would benefit from wearing a coat when it's cold.

she is a bichon terrier mix ( we think) - she spends a lot of time enjoying sniffing, runs on the beach and walks for an hour in fields , stopping to sniff. The sea swnds off v cold weather and she was shivering . She aslo goes thro rock pools and gets wet and cold.

Thanks all re last night.
we said bed as normal , but left crate door obviously open.living room door shut.
this am was lying on the sofa .
we will see how it goes .

Also, you have only had her 3 weeks - that is no time at all. She will only now be starting to relax a little. Slow down and be gentle, to your dog and to yourself. I hope you feel better soon.

I agree that she mustn’t feel very comfortable in the crate as otherwise she’d go in to it herself. My brother’s Beagle loves her crate.
My three dogs are rescues. The English Setter sleeps in a big dog bed by our bed, the Kokoni has decided she’s sleeping with us (despite neither of us initially wanting her to, we now don’t mind…. She’s a really small dog so it’s not intrusive). The Toy poodle sleeps in her basket downstairs in the lounge.

Our 6 month old puppy only ever uses his crate for sleeping at night. We went on our first trip away with him over Christmas and realised his travel crate was way too small so he ended up sleeping on the bed with me for 3 nights. I was concerned that he wouldn’t settle back into his larger crate at home, but he’s been totally fine and slept as normal.

he was resistant to his crate for a little while, but we moved it into a warmer cozy part of the house and not looked back since.
