Has anyone had their dog castrated late in life?

We have just had to have our almost 10 year old cockapoo castrated as he had a perianal adenoma (hopefully benign).

He’s always been very lean and also full of energy, he’s never looked “old”. The vet said both of these might change and I have also been reading about separation anxiety, lack of confidence etc. He’s really always been the perfect dog so I hoping his personality doesn’t change much. Just wondering if anyone has any experiences?

Sorry, I don’t, but am interested enough to follow (have a dog of the same age).
Best of luck and hope your dog is ok x

I would be very surprised if getting castrated later in life introduces sudden issues such as separation anxiety.

I’ve had 2 Labs castrated - admittedly much younger at a year old - and it didn’t change their personality at all beyond stopping them humping their beds & improvement to recall when female dogs present.

My first Labrador was 11 when he was castrated - he had an enlarged prostate and it was the best way of getting rid of most testosterone and reducing the size. Absolutely no issues, he didn’t put on weight and neither did his personality and behaviour change.

Yes I had an older male castrated due to a health issue.

He became much lazier, less interested in other dogs and lost a bit of his spark. His coat also went fluffy and a bit dry.

No lack of confidence or any issues with training though thankfully.

My first dog, a lab had to be castrated late he was about 8 they also took off a small lump at the same time, that's quite a while ago so I may be fuzzy on some details as I was a late teen when I got him.

I remember his recovery was easy as he wasn't an energetic youngster but it was the first time he was under anesthesia and he was groggy for a while.
He did put weight on alot easier after the op he was easy to keep trim before
He lived with other dogs so I never noticed a change in confidence, he was a very easy going dog till the day he died.
And it might have been chance but he shed alot more in the years after the op and his coat lost some of its shine
He also started to have some trouble with his joints and arthritis the year after but that could have just been age
