Is it time?

My 16yo rescue is sleeping 23.5 hours a day. Or so it seems. He is incontinent,we're finding random poos and puddles, despite his being taken out every hour or so. He's not happy about that!
He's chewing at his joints, and waking us up whining in the night.
We adopted him at 4yo, we've loved him for over a decade, but now I'm wondering if it's time to let him go.
WWYD?
Poor old stinky boy.

So do you mean he sleeps whenever youre
not taking him out? Is he in pain?

XmasSadTimes · 28/12/2025 14:43

He's really not eating much. And it looks like his right hip is giving way. I carry him up and down the stairs. He's not keen on going out at all.

Has he seen the vet recently? Is he on medication for arthritis? Chewing at his joints is a sign his joints are causing pain. Whining can be a sign of pain as well

Thehorticuluralhussie · 28/12/2025 14:44

I'm afraid it does seem to be. He's in pain and distressed from what you've said.
It's absolutely horrible but we have to do what's best for them.
Very sorry for you and your boy.

He doesn't want to go out. I think he is in pain.

It is time. xxxxx

XmasSadTimes · 28/12/2025 14:45

He's on metacam

Sorry to say but what you have described sounds like it’s time to stop him suffering. Sorry.

Grumblies · 28/12/2025 14:45

Yes it sounds like he is ready to go. It's not much of a life if he's not enjoying food or walks and he can't get out to the toilet when he needs to. As hard as it is, where given the chance a good end is the very last thing you can do for them and it sounds very much like he is telling you it's time.

raspberrieswithchocolate · 28/12/2025 14:50

Yes, I think it's his time. The medicine isn't managing his pain, he's suffering and not enjoying life anymore. I'm so sorry

XmasSadTimes · 28/12/2025 14:54

He has always been a bit of a character! And now while he still likes a snuggle on the settee, it's a bit strange now there's not so much of him, and his coat is weirdly greasy.
We're definitely going to miss the auld fella.

Crikey! I wonder what that deleted post said! People can be strange.

noctilucentcloud · 28/12/2025 15:22

I think it's time. From what you've written it sounds as if he has very little enjoyment now and is in pain and is distressed at night. I'm sorry OP.

CMOTDibbler · 28/12/2025 15:34

I had to make this decision for my old boy a few weeks ago, and I'd say it is time for yours. The chewing at his joints especially says to me that he is in uncontrolled pain.
If it helps, my ddogs last minutes were beautiful, cuddled in our laps with loads of treats then he slipped away so peacefully

RollyPollyBatFace · 28/12/2025 15:39

Yes. And I’d do this tomorrow tbh.

XmasSadTimes · 28/12/2025 16:01

I'll call the vet in the morning 😔

better a day too early than a day too late. Its very hard.

Barrellturn · 28/12/2025 17:13

Yes. My girl got like this at 16. I wish I'd done it earlier tbh. The worst bit was waiting for the appt to get it done. It felt like we should cherish the time but of course we had to live life and I was sick with guilt but it was for the best.

Edinburghdaze · 28/12/2025 19:05

It definitely sounds like it is time for him to go. Sorry x

XmasSadTimes · 29/12/2025 15:19

Update
Took him to the vet today, he's gone. Very quietly and quickly. 😪
Thanks everyone

Really sorry about the loss of your dog. You've definitely done him the biggest kindness with the vet visit. Dogs are incredible at hiding their pain so when you do start to notice it, they've likely been in pain for a while.
It's a blessing that we get to share their short lives with them and it's a blessing that they can trust us to know when to put them before our own feelings. You've done the right thing ♥️

raspberrieswithchocolate · 29/12/2025 15:29

I'm very sorry for your loss, you made the right decision for him and he's at peace now, l hope that gives you some small bit of comfort.
Take care❤️💐
