When does a Cavapoo calm down?

We have a 3 year old male Cavapoos. He has a lovely temperament and is great with the kids but he still has lots of puppy energy! When do they calm down, even just a bit? It doesn't help that he has terrible separation anxiety too.

I don’t think any of those yappy curly little guys do. All the ones I know are bloody lunatics!

Well I have a two year old Cavalier and he's mental, soo... I think it's just their personalities? Mine almost bounces off the walls with his energy.

My daughter-in-law’s is 8, and still like a puppy. He’s well- trained, but very playful and energetic. I find him delightful, but I don’t have to live with him.

Ours is nearly 5 and he’s not too manic at all. Has a few moments and zooms round but pretty chilled much of the time.

We have a 4 year old cockapoo and he's pretty chilled - I think it's the luck of the draw really.

Unfortunately, OP, no one can give you an answer. Unlike pedigree breeds where personality, maturity speed, and health issues are set such as my breed where you’re roughly looking at 3 years…there is no guarantee with the dog you’ve got. It could be years, it could never happen.

What sort of energy are you talking about? Is it complete mania or just high energy?

vanillalattes · 28/12/2025 09:13

I’ve never met a calm cavapoo - they’re all very highly strung and full of anxious energy.

stonkytonk11 · 28/12/2025 09:50

Our cockapoo is 4 and very chilled but then she has been that way since just after puppyhood. I take it your dog gets plenty of exercise and isn’t left for long periods? Other than that it’s maybe just their nature, at least cavapoos are little so makes the hyperactivity a bit more manageable!

Isitsticky · 28/12/2025 09:54

Our cavapoo is 20 months and has his moments but on the whole is pretty relaxed and a sweetie. We practised leaving him for appropriate lengths of time from a young age and that's not a problem.

sittingonabeach · 28/12/2025 09:54

Our cavalier was puppy like until about 9yo! Separation anxiety is common in both cavaliers and poodles

Ylvamoon · 28/12/2025 15:27

Is he neutered? If yes, when was it done. Luck of testosterone plus the Xpoo can all be factors to high puppy bouncing energy. After all a Poodle is a highly intelligent working dog. You probably got more poo than cava .
I have a 4yo resce cockapoo, the only thing that made the manic nervous energy bearable is k9 sports. In other words a job. She's thriving and it also has a positive effect on the separation anxiety as we have a lot of ringside and in car waiting for training & competitions.
