What age was your puppy toilet trained?

Just that really as I’m struggling massively. I wondered if my expectations are just too high?

Puppy is 10-11weeks and has no concept of going to the toilet outside. She’s weeing or pooing constantly. I take her out every 30mins and heavily praise for anything done outside but then she comes in and is still not getting it. Sometimes I’m standing outside for ages walking around and she’s lying down, playing or doing anything but going.

She will literally wee infront of me anywhere, she hasn’t got a place.

She also plays in and drinks water constantly which sees to be making it worse but I’m not sure restricting it is the right thing to do.

Any thoughts much appreciated as it’s getting me down now.

Thankyou everyone. She’s a Newfoundland.

My last puppy (6-7 years ago!) was pretty much trained from day 1 hence why this has been a shock to the system.

Im doing pretty much all of the above but she doesn’t see to improving at all hence wondering if this is normal or not! I’m basically catching her just after, cleaning it without fuss and repeating plus rewarding her every time she wees outside with praise and treats.

Ive avoided puppy pads so far but is it always a bad option! My poor floors can’t take much more 🙈

I used the washable puppy pads for my Pyrenean because the breeder had been using them. Pup used them reliably. But she was free range from 8 weeks, not crated. Pads were beside the French door to the garden, she used them only at night, because during the day I was taking her outside regularly. We have steps at the back door so we were carrying her up and down until she was Labrador size. She was fully reliable day and night by 14 weeks. I'm very laid back about puppy training because I've had 9 giants so I know they get it by 4 months. The boys are much quicker with holding wees though.
I know puppy pads are hated here but I think they're excellent and they absolutely did not teach my dogs that it was okay to toilet indoors.

Our rough collie was at least 7 months. Taken out regularly but didn’t properly click until then. Last one (and one before that!) was about the same.

We have had 4 puppies over the years, all terrier crosses. 2 boys and a girl, completely reliable by 16/17 weeks. Our most recent addition, a girl, wasnt reliable until week 24.

@CoubousAndTourmaIet I’m also thinking of ditching the crate. She gets really distressed in it. She likes to be able to move around onto tiles or her bed whenever she wants. It seems like everyone thinks crating is the right way though!

I've never crated. I don't think it's healthy physically or emotionally for large or giant breed puppies. I've reared 9 giants, all free ranging pups. They need space. My breed likes to move around a lot during the night. They're heavily coated and they overheat easily, so I give them the choice to lie in a carpeted room or on a cool tiled floor. They have the run of two rooms from 7/8/9 weeks old, using dog gates to restrict them to the kitchen when needed.

Four of mine have lived with at least one other dog, the others, including my current bitch, were a lone dog. I sleep down on the sofa to be close to the pups initially, in the toilet training phase.

We never had any barking, yowling or howling with any of them, beyond the very first night. No issues with toilet training really, except for our second bitch being very stubborn about wees 🙄 As I said before, this girl we have now (20 months old currently) was trained to puppy pads at the back door initially, which saved a lot of cleaning up, but she only used them for wees, she could hold her poo from the start. And she has never once toileted indoors since about 14 weeks old.

If it's possible to "puppy proof" a room and use gates, then it's no issue rearing free range. It makes for a happy contented pup. I think a lot of people are scared to try, they imagine the house will be wrecked, but it's never happened for us. Current girl decided from the off that underneath the dining table was going to be her sleeping area and that's worked out fine. All the dining chairs still have their legs intact.

We used the mornings to help, ‘go wee wees’ when she went out first thing, and ‘yeah wee wees’ and gave her a small treat when she wee’d in the garden
some people get a bell by the door that dogs ring lol
what breed is she?

chunkyBoo · 22/12/2025 11:06

… oh she was with us at about 12 weeks and it took a good 2-3 weeks

drivinmecrazy · 22/12/2025 11:43

As said above, the game changer for us was when we penned off a tiny bit of our garden so there were no distractions.
wish we’d have done this from the get go because he wasn’t what I’d class as toilet trained til about four months.
Probably about six months before we had no accidents at all.
Hes a Weimaraner who are ‘supposedly’ highly intelligent, think we got a broken one 😝
