2 year old cockapoo. Very nervous and barky. She was a rescue. Has anyone tried Nutripaw calming treats and did they work ?

I wouldn’t touch them if you paid me - they’ve got a very bad rep for sneakily turning your order into a subscription.

My vet once described these types of supplements as ‘the dog ownership equivalent of giving a toddler an I-pad instead of parenting when toilet training a toddler and expecting the same result.’ They meant that when they do work, it’s luck rather than due to the actual product.

What causes her nervousness and barking? If she’s a rescue, how long have you had her? Getting a rescue that’s had a difficult start, or been in foster or kennels, settled can take over a year.

We had a very good experience with them - our beagle took them for about a year and they brought his anxiety down enough so that we could desensitise him to the things that were upsetting him. We didn’t subscribe - just got them on Amazon as and when we needed them.

Amazon reviews currently are showing a fake product where the pot looks the same but the ingredients are inferior and the product looks completely different. The correct ones are heart shaped. There have also been reports of fake ones being sold on Ebay and someone's dog was ill from it. So I would recommend only buying direct.

You could look at Dorwest Herbs Skullcap & Valerian if you need to take the edge off her anxiety. It comes in tablet or liquid form. We got some for bonfire night and it really calmed our girl down quickly.

We did buy them direct - they have their own store on Amazon.

Well you should be okay then, but if you look at Amazon product reviews you can see the fake ones.

Sure, you can get all sorts of dodgy stuff on Amazon - buyer beware and all that.

We've not bought it in ages though, don't need it anymore :)

Cockapoos are generally a pretty anxious breed I’ve found. Not their fault, best way is to be calm and gentle with them, they respond great to positive reinforcement.

Wouldn’t use nutripaw, I’ve a weird feeling they pay for a lot of their reviews!

We use “DORWEST HERBS Scullcap & Valerian Calming Tablets for Dogs and Cats, 200 Tablets, Natural Dog Calming Supplements for Stress and Anxiety Relief”. They’re the best we’ve found. Won’t solve the problem but can help along with other things and takes the edge off for our boy. Also have a chat to your vet, they can point you to a local positive behaviourist, or chat through prescription options if they think they’re needed. The ABTC website is the best for looking for behaviourists, they’re all properly vetted and qualified and only use humane, research backed methods

Also have a look at what food your dog has. “All about dog food” website is good for checking the quality of food. You’d be surprised how much food can impact anxiety behaviours. Pooch and Mutt do a calming food range that is pretty good!

Dorwest herbs are very good indeed so are nutricalm but I really like adaptil soft calming chews for my dog, they are fast acting whereas with dorwest and nutricalm take a few days to get into the system, my dog wasn't keen on the smell of taste of dorwest, but the soft chews he will eat like a treat. Pet guru drops are good and fast acting as well and he doesn't seem to noticed the flavour on his food . For my dog the clear favourite is adaptil. He doesn't go drowsy or dozy with them at all and they work.

The Dorwest Valerian compound, which is a liquid in a bottle with a measured dropper, actually works within about 10 or 15 minutes. We gave our girl a dose of it in a bit of Greek yoghurt on bonfire night and she settled very quickly. We'll dose her up on New Years Eve also.
She doesn't need anything long term but is startled by loud noises, so something that is effective quickly is really handy.

Yes the drops are fast acting, the tablets need a few days build up though. My dog doesn't like the dorwest drops unfortunately he just refuses to have anything with them in or on, so we tried other things. I do like other dorwest products though, they're very good and the customer service & advice they give if you have any questions is brilliant, they really know their products inside out.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 12/12/2025 14:02

I can understand your dog not liking the Dorwest Valerian @chattyness , it does have quite a strong smell. I was surprised that our girl went near it tbh, but I did use a generous amount of yoghurt to get it down her 😆

Second dorwest valarian tabs and liquid. Nutracalm tablets are good too.
