I’m collecting my first dog - a miniature poodle puppy- just after Christmas.

i want to have everything ready and be all organised- what do I need?

I already have a crate and lots of fleecy blankets.
I’m planning on getting a car seat and a cuddly toy with a heartbeat.

What else do I need? What are your puppy essentials?
im so excited 😊

Bowls, food, poo bags, collar with id tag, lead, anti chew spray for your furniture (doesn’t work with all dogs) puppy pads or lots of newspaper, obligatory photo for mn.

have fun

Read some dog books!! A few of the threads on puppies have some. Read the threads on puppies! Our dog lives for those thick rope toys!

If its a poodle it may need a coat for walking in the rain/wet/mud. Also buy some dog shampoo.

Being a puppy it needs something to chew for when its teething, Pets at Home can advise.

Also make sure it has a collar with your phone number on a disc and that it is micro chipped and registered with a vet prior to bringing it home.

Enjoy, poodles are very intelligent so hiding treats around the room, giving it a snuffle blanket or giving it one of those balls that dispense treats would be great. When its older you can buy treat dispensing games for them so they can use their brains.

Amazon sell a variety, we have a couple for our beagle bitch.

Chew toys (to shove in their mouth rather than your hands/ankles - puppies are bitey!).

A good training book (Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy is pretty good despite the terrible name).

I didn't use puppy pads, we trained to go outside from the outset as I didn't want to cause any confusion by permitting toileting inside.

A harness for walks (& to get them used to it beforehand). and a longline lead (although you won't need this immediately).

A good vet and pet insurance... AwkwardPup cost his insurers £9,000 before he was 18 months old.

Coffee and gin. You'll need both Grin

Vet appointment for any vaccinations and a once-over.

Melsy88 · 09/12/2025 16:14

I had a pen for mine and put the crate in there so that she had more space when i couldn't watch her!

Some high quality treats for training.

Treat toys/kongs to keep them busy

Collar with tag just in case!

Enjoy :)

Melsy88 · 09/12/2025 16:15

Oh and a bag/sling to use to take them out and about before they are allowed on the floor.

Join the Dog Training Advice and Support group on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/share/g/17j8WGqMko/?mibextid=wwXIfr

I don’t know if the link will work, but there are a few imposter groups around so make sure you get to the correct one. It is a learning group so there are loads of (free) resources to read covering all situations with dogs, including Puppy’s first night. Read all the guides that seem relevant for you and, especially if it’s your first puppy, pay the few pounds to join the puppy support group.
This group has been the best resource I’ve used for my dog.

Join this group and read the files. Remember by law you need a tag with certain details on it.

A really warm dressing gown with a hood for when you are stood in the garden in the night waiting for them to toilet.
Crocs to keep at the back door to stick your feet in rapidly as you take the puppy out to toilet
Regina Blitz kitchen paper for mopping up accidents (my preferred brand) and pet accident spray with enzymes
Crate and fleece blankets
Gin
dont do puppy pads, they only teach the puppy to toilet inside

puppies are lovely, but incredibly hard work, and a key is to never let them do anything that you won’t want an adult dog to do like mouthing your hand or jumping up
