...specifically this:
Midnight Blue Dog Walking Bag | As Seen On Dragons' Den | Barking Bags https://share.google/0rNAfqpIMiisLizW1
I'm thinking of getting it for son-in-law.
Don't want to get anything pointless, so is it something you'd actually use?
Failing that, other ideas are very welcome.
TIA 😊

Love my barking bag! Had it about 4 years and it's yet to let me down. Only downside is it doesn't really hold a decent water bottle, but the price for the quality can't be beaten

Silverbirchleaf · 05/12/2025 12:53

I’d use it, but I’ve discovered that people are quite particular about what they use.

I have a couple of dog bags, an everyday one and a larger one in summer which holds a drink bottle. Dh and ds just take a treat bag out with them and stuff a couple of poo bags in their pocket.

I really like this website for dog stuff.

Other ideas.

walking trousers
fleece
water bottle and water bottle sling
bottle of whiskey

21ZIGGY · 05/12/2025 12:57

I find my barking bag a bit useless. Treat bit not big enough for proper training. Other pockets too small. No space for toys unless in main bit which gets everything else dirty and slobbery

Thatcannotberight · 05/12/2025 13:09

I use mine every day. I asked a local dog walker if she was happy with hers ( I'd noticed her wearing it.). I can fit a drink bottle in one side pocket. I use the one with a silicone cup that bends over the bottle when not in use. My BT prefers that from any other kind. I keep treats in a separate pouch but put them in the other side pocket. My phone and purse in the main bag, a whistle in the back pocket, keys in the zipped pocket on the flap.
It wouldn't be big enough for a whole day excursion, but for every day it's good. Only downside is the padding on the shoulder strap slides down, so I've pinned mine in the right place for me. Easy to stitch if needed.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 05/12/2025 13:42

For us that bag would be too faffy. We both tend to just stick things in our pockets. For a day out we'd use a small rucksack rather than this type of bag.

FastFood · 05/12/2025 14:04

No I wouldn't, I'm probably not the target audience. When we go for a long walk in the park, I just take a tote bag with a ball, treats, poo bags, and a book for me for when we stop in a coffee shop.
Probably great for a big dog still in training, but I can't say I see much people with something like that in my local south east london parks.

I'd have said it's for a small dog person actually, we have a large breed and a bag of this type would be constantly in the way, given that the dogs are level with our hip.

ramonaquimby · 05/12/2025 14:37

No
i have a dog and would just use my pockets for an hours walk or so (wouldn't bring a water bottle) or my own rucksack for a longer one

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 05/12/2025 15:03

I like it, but looking at the comments it seems like a 50/50 gift.

LaMarschallin · 05/12/2025 15:20

Very grateful for those who've taken the time to give advice.
As WhatATimeToBeAlive says, it does look 50/50 as a gift.
They have a camper van though, so I wonder whether it would be a useful bit of doggy luggage 🤔

No.

I just chuck poo bags and my phone in my pocket 99% of the time.

We usually drive to her walks to bottles of water and stuff I leave in the car. For long walks, we have a water bottle with a bowl attached that’s got a long strap so just carry it over my shoulder.

Springflowersyay · 05/12/2025 15:34

I’m a dog walker and I use this bag.
I clip a silicone treat pouch to the front pocket for wet treats like sausage bits. The side pockets hold a ball and/or a bag of poo.
I also use camera lense pouches clipped onto the side of the bags - they hold bags of poo until I can find a bin and mask the small as there’s a velcro lid.

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 05/12/2025 15:44

DH uses a similar non branded bag for dog walking, albeit his goes round his waist which he much prefers. It has treats and poo bags in it permanently so we literally use it every day as it’s so easy to grab on the way out instead of remembering which pocket the treats and poo bags were in last.

It also has hand sanitiser kept in it and a spare lead in case one breaks. We have a small dog.

I’m actually surprised at the number of people who’ve posted here who don’t have a small dog walking bag that joins them on every single walk. Ours even comes on the 5 mins for a quick wee walks, and supplements a backpack as an easier access bag on long walks.

Maybe it’s the bum bag nature of ours that makes it feel easier to use..

Thatcannotberight · 05/12/2025 16:38

This bag has hooks/clips on the back that allow it to be worn around the waist. I don't drive to my dog walks or go to a café or read a book. I carry enough to do a two hour dog walk using it.

I don't drive or go to a cafe either but all we need for a two hour walk is a few poo bags in a pocket. I think maybe it depends on the dog as to how much paraphernalia is needed.

tinyspiny · 05/12/2025 16:47

I no longer have a dog but I wouldn’t have used that .

Perhaps not this time of year as much, but in the summer when I'm in t shirts with no pockets, I'm taking my keys, phone, purse, dog treats and a drink bottle for my dog.

BeQuirkyMintScroller · 05/12/2025 17:03

I actually found a game beater's bag better than most dog walking bags. Most of the dog walking bags were just awful designs and iver engineered.

i was in a animal supply shop that had stuff for shoots and saw a lovely waxed cotton messenger style bag, that can also go round the waist. The kind if thing that Barbour might produce except without all the labels :-)

I agree that a dog walking bag is a really personal choice and youre unlikely to get it right. As a dog owner I'd be thrilled with a bumper box of good quality poo bag rolls (Becco, Earth rated) or a nice leather lead (can never have too many of those), or a LickiCup/Mat since it always seems to be in the dishwasher when i need it..

LaMarschallin · 05/12/2025 17:09

I'm more encouraged than I was.
I might try and put feelers via my other DD but, in the meantime, I've been given some interesting alternatives.
Very grateful 😊

Sorry to be the naysayer here but I think it's just too easy to get it very wrong with dog related items.
We use very specific leads and we don't use licki mats etc. at all.

I mean unless you're sure what they would actually use, I think I just wouldn't...
Our dogs have been given things that have gone straight in the bin 😬

ACynicalDad · 05/12/2025 18:02

Nope, can't fit the dog in it. I use the K9 Sports Sack and it's brilliant.

CrushingOnRubies · 05/12/2025 20:37

Nah! For a normal walk use pockets in the winter. Or a bum bag in the summer and for agility.. If going to a longer walk I have a rucksack so I can put coat water etc in too.

that bag in the op looks rather cumbersome and like it would get in the way
