We have 2 dogs - a border terrier (no problems here) and a Sprocker Spaniel, otherwise known as the mud-sponge.
Someone told me about the drying 'bags' you can get. Does anyone have one? Are they any good?
Also, any recommendations for a waterproof coat with legs for the Spaniel would be good too.

Thanks

Following, Springer spaniel..... I feel your pain!

ohtobe4 · 03/12/2025 22:02

@Jinglejinglejingle7
yes. I mean, lovely dogs and all that, but when they're wet…..
Our sprocker is about 90% Springer I reckon!

Our Springador loves water and mud so we have an equafleece. We don’t put it on her during her walk, but before we come into the house as it stops her shaking mud literally everywhere and getting her muddy belly all over the carpet. They have legs and I’ve seen people with dogs wearing them out on the walk too

ohtobe4 · 03/12/2025 22:37

@mummytomumtobro just looked at Equafleece. they look good. nice and long on the legs. How do you put them on though?

Equafleece are really good, I bought one for my dog at 6 months old and it still looked as good as new when he passed a way at 13yrs old. Only used mine for after a walk helps to whick the water away. Wash and dry brilliantly. He was a cocker spaniel ❤️

RunningJo · 04/12/2025 06:45

Equafleece are a great for post walk, we use one on our dog to stop the mud, but I’ve found them not to be waterproof, but great for keeping mud off.
Also rough and tumble dog drying toweling coats are great.

Pleasedontdothat · 04/12/2025 08:00

I use ruff and tumble drying coats on my Toller and use a towel for his legs and paws. The coats are now on their second Toller and still going strong. I tried a drying bag on my first dog and he hated it - it also didn’t work that well as it was too big for him (I’d followed the sizing guide but it was enormous!)

I've got an Equifleece for my filthy spaniel which has legs. I need to put it on over her head and poke her legs through the leg holes but she never seems to mind. It is waterproof enough that if she is on a walk, where there is no chance of her jumping in to water, then it keeps her lovely and clean and dry. Unfortunately, on most walks we do there is a source of water for her to jump in 🙄
Usually she just gets filthy and soaking wet and I put her in a drying coat, towel her legs and put her on a microfibre bath mat which soaks up the rest of the water.
I think it's just the joy of spaniels though, they are absolute mud Muppets.
I also have a terrier who wouldn't dream of getting wet and muddy on a walk but I think I will get her an Equifleece to keep them warm in the worst weather.

Here she is looking gorgeous in her mulberry Equifleece.

I have a drying bag for my CKCS . It does a reasonable job but I still need other towels too. It lost some of its soak-ability after I washed it. I've also got a microfiber shaggy towel thing which is better.
But yes, I feel your pain!!

Well we started out with Equafleece full body coat but it got so wet it was awful peeling it off him at the end of a walk. I was so disappointed.

muddyford · 04/12/2025 11:02

I have a springer spaniel and treated him to a Ruff and Tumble drying coat. He gets wet and muddy, so I swish him then swathe him in the coat. Just need to dry his legs and feet.

DramaAlpaca · 04/12/2025 11:09

I've a springer. He gets so muddy that walks have to end with a dip in the nearby lake, then it's home to be rubbed dry the old fashioned way with a couple of old towels. His ears take longest to dry.

@Undergroundovergroundwomblingfree love your girl, she looks so happy with her springer smile Smile

Lennonjingles · 04/12/2025 11:13

This is our boy in his drying coat, it does go further round his bum and legs with elastic straps, he has a large one, but probably needs an extra large. It’s great, drys really quick, in just 10 minutes.

Ruff and tumble drying coat. They're great. Our Sprocker dog comes out of his all dry and fluffy afterwards and it stops him trying to dry himself all over the carpets/ beds/ sofas.

Undergroundovergroundwomblingfree · 04/12/2025 11:51

All cosy in her drying coat. Aren't spaniels just the most gorgeous creatures on the planet 😍

@Undergroundovergroundwomblingfree
Yes, they are.
They are also the most annoying creatures on the planet at times too!!!
But I still love them of course.
We have a drying coat for him, but I wondered if people use anything to stop the mud getting on them in the first place during the walk.
Our usual walks don't go near water, so safe for him to wear a fleece.
River walks/swims are a special treat for him! We have had to canoe madly down the river after him once because he saw some ducks and swam after them, then just enjoyed the swimming. He was bloody fast!

I think that an Equifleece would be the solution then. They are a bit wet and soggy to remove but they dry really quickly and are ready to go again for the next walk.

tizwozliz · 04/12/2025 12:16

With an active spaniel, you want to think about if they're going to be too warm in an equafleece. I have labs, and generally when it's cool enough that I don't think they'd get too hot in a coat, the ground is frozen so it's not so muddy. I think equafleece do some coats that are not so warm and more aimed at keeping clean.

Thundertoast · 04/12/2025 12:55

Equafleece here as well, although agree that if you have an active spaniel that doesnt mind the cold and wet (most of them) that you need to think about them getting too hot. I dont necessarily have that problem with mine as even though she is bonkers, she hates being cold and wet so an equafleece works well. Depends on the type of walks tbh - if you have a ball obsessive and they are going to be high adrenaline fetching the whole time, probably too warm, but general spaniel-ing should be fine! She's also not a puddle diver which helps, but to be honest ive been really impressed by the equafleece providing a mud barrier, even if she is slightly damp afterwards. After the walk, I pull the fleece off her, give her feet a brief squeeze with a towel and she's good to go. The fleece gets chucked on the back of a chair or a radiator if really soaking, a lot of the mud can be brushed off them when dry which also helps.
She does still try to dry herself on the carpet.

Domino211 · 04/12/2025 13:03

I use a towelling drying coat for my Springer after a quick rinse with a mud daddy - he’s not a fan of wearing it!! And a stack of old towels that are kept in the hallway for winter for feet and legs. It never fails to surprise me how he can get so muddy, I went for a walk with a friend and her lab who had slightly grubby feet by the end but mine had mud everywhere, including his eyebrows 😂

I’ve never put a coat on him during a walk, I worry he’d either get too hot haring around or more likely get stuck on something……..

FiddleFigs · 04/12/2025 13:09

I have two cocker spaniels, and depending on the conditions use either Equafleece body suits or raincoats (with legs) (these ones). When we get home, suits are peeled off, feet and undercarriage hosed down and, if necessary, they get wrapped up in their drying robes for 15 mins or so.

Editing to add that even though they are very active when out, they get cold and the older one is utterly miserable when it's wet - they don't seem to mind the Equafleece.

stanspan · 04/12/2025 13:37

I have a springer spaniel that gets wet and usually muddy on every walk! If he’s just wet he gets towel dried with old towels and then usually stays in his bed for an hour or so after getting back. If muddy he gets hosed down as well then towelled off. We have a drying coat that I put on him if it’s cold and I think he may need to keep warm after the walk, for example if we have a longish drive home after the walk.
We don’t put anything on him when out, no matter what the weather, he is very active and we keep moving so he doesn’t get cold. I wouldn’t want a coat getting in the way for him exploring. He has occasionally had icicles on his belly fur and ears but as long as we keep moving he is happy enough.
A stack of old towels are the most used things in our house currently!

ohtobe4 · 04/12/2025 14:36

Yes to the sack of old towels by the back door. It makes me laugh how the terrier stands patiently waiting to be dried when we get home, even though the water just slips straight off his fur and he doesn't get mud all over him! But if it's happening to his brother, then it has to happen to him too!
That waterproof coat looks good @FiddleFigs . I'll look into that. What size did you get for your cockers? And are they small or large cockers?
Our Sprocker is more small springer size.

FiddleFigs · 04/12/2025 15:22

@ohtobe4 - the tiny cocker (9 kg) wears a small; the other (18kg) wears a medium. The legs aren't full length - just above their knees, which I think is better for their mobility.
