So stressed, my dog is unwell and Im about to go into hospital with my daughter

My daughter is having a pretty major operation on Sunday, we have to be at the hospital early Sunday morning.

My dog (8 year old working cocker)

was sick overnight on Tuesday, since then hasnt kept down food but was still drinking. Saw the vet yesterday who checked her over and gave her Zitac prescription and sent us home to see how she gets on.

Shes worse today, has continued to be sick, not keeping down water and now wont drink water.

She hasnt had a wee today.

Or eaten anything since yesterday which was only 1 small spoonful of wet dog food. Wednesdays meals were eaten but brought back up.

Im so so so stressed and worried.

I have another appointment for her today but theyve just rang to say a big emergency has come in and the rest of the days consultations have to be cancelled.

She is so lethargic, just lying down on the sofa. She is still awake and fairly alert but not moving much.

Sounds to me like you need to explain again that she is deteriorating and needs to see a vet today. Can you go to a different branch of your vets or ask them to refer you to another vets. All vets should have or refer to another out of hours vet so that would be another option.

jugof · 21/11/2025 15:29

@BiteyShark I just rang back there and said I wasnt happy to leave her until tomorrow, she said they will ring as soon as the emergency surgery is finished and try and get her in or to another branch if possible, said she will call back at 4.30

I keep on having what if scenarios of her being really unwell and my daughter being in surgery, my husband is working away and cant be home for the surgery.

Do you have a dog sitter staying with your dog who can follow up on any treatment or medication given by your vet?

BiteyShark · 21/11/2025 15:35

It’s good that they are trying to fit you in. If that doesn’t work then I would be looking to take her to the out of hours vet with those symptoms.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 21/11/2025 15:35

You need to get some help in from dog loving friends. The timing is awful, but we lost our dog due to similar symptoms. He was already old, and would not have been ok with the treatment options so we needed to let him go.

I think you should go to a different vet that can see him. Did they do bloods?

jugof · 21/11/2025 16:04

No bloods weren’t done yesterday - they’ve said I can take her at 5pm

ill be leaving her with my 22 year old son when we go into hospital , he loves her very much I’m just worried at the load on him as well as worrying about his sister

She has been seen and is being admitted for fluids and investigation

I’m afraid it sounds like it could be Addison’s Disease. My dog has it and his symptoms were near identical before diagnosis.

Ask your vet to check bloods as it’s a medical emergency. It’s a very treatable condition if diagnosed.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 21/11/2025 18:54

It’s really tough. We were in a similar position- had gone away for a family event, leaving the dog with adult DS. It’s awful needing to be somewhere else.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 21/11/2025 18:57

I would say, it’s really tough, and you have to accept that you may not be able to do things the way you’d otherwise hope. So there will be a bit more pressure on your son, the vet bill may be higher, the decisions may not be as timely as you’d like- because you are stuck in a tough place. Be gentle on yourself and accept that you are all doing your best. And try and line up some support for your son.

Get your husband to check in with him a bit more.

My foster dog had a very bad gastrointestinal illness a couple of weeks ago. It started with vomiting on Monday and the diarrhoea started on Tuesday. By Thursday she had stopped eating and drinking and barely moved all day. She was admitted to the vets on the Friday and put on a drip for 4 hours. Honestly, the dog I picked up was nothing like the dog I dropped off. She was so much better for having some fluids inside her. Hopefully your dog will be the same.
I hope your daughter's operation goes well. X

I'm sorry, that's all very stresssful. I hope she's much better tomorrow after a night of fluids & stuff.

i hope DD's surgery goes well xx

billhubbard · 22/11/2025 07:22

Hope that you get some good news on your dog today op .

Just wanted to update here, I cant remember where we got up to but she admitted to hospital for fluids etc and deteriorated overnight, they called me in the morning to say theyd scanned her and thought they could see something that could be foreign body and as she was becoming very unwell they needed to do surgery - they removed a large stone like thing from her duodenum and she stayed in hospital 3 nights.

My daughter had her surgery the following day, so my adult son collected her from hospital and took care of her until DD was well enough to come home a few days later.

They are both recovering well, doggy had all of her staples out and is back to her lovely self, eating well and getting more energy.

Thanks for the messages!

Brandyb · 05/12/2025 23:37

What a relief, hope all well on both fronts! 😘

Theresabatinmykitchen · 05/12/2025 23:42

Great news OP, what a worrying and stressful time.

CrazyGoatLady · 06/12/2025 00:36

Glad your dog is ok. You must be really relieved. It's so worrying when animals are ill, they can't tell us what's wrong.

noctilucentcloud · 06/12/2025 10:06

I'm glad both your daughter and dog are recovering well OP
