Dog car seat

Going to a self catering cottage for Christmas so will have luggage and a week’s worth of food (remote island so have to take everything with us on 1 trip.

I was thinking of freeing up boot space with a dog car seat but never used on. Are they any good? What should I look out for / avoid?

Any advice would be great.

I have a hammock cover on my back seat and a seat belt clip thingy that goes round the head rest. That gets clipped onto their harness.
I tried the seat belts that go into the seat belt holder, but the dog would stand on the button and release himself.
I've also used the box type car seats for puppies, but mine both climbed out of them as they got bigger.

You don’t need a car seat, just put them on the backseat with a seatbelt attached to their harness. Like @SpanielsGalore we use the ones that go over the headrest otherwise they can stand on them and get free.

Just be aware that only a few car harnesses passed a crash test as there's no set safety standards to meet most on the market are just for restraint so the dog can't cause distraction to driver or get loose when doors opened.

Crash tested dog harness is the cheapest option.

You can get crash tested dog seats like the 4pets caree but these are for small dog breeds and usually expensive so depending on your dog breed and budget might not work for you.

Thank you all. Any recommendations then on crash tested harnesses?

We’ve got two dog seats in two cars, our dog is 9kg. She wears a harness as well. The advantage of the seat is that she will settle in it, like a bed whereas on the actual people seat she doesn’t. Mine is a trixie one, it’s like a dog bed. Dh’s is like a box. She can see out of the window in his.

Both of these are links are three times the price we paid so definitely shop around!

I use a Kurgo one when I can't crate my dogs. I think Ezydog and Ruffwear do one too. There is a cheap one in Pets At Home but the quality and adjustment is poor.

Sleepypod do a couple of great ones but they are expensive.

Lots of people will happily use something that isn't crash tested but it isn't just for the dogs safety. If you're in an accident the dog could be thrown into the driver/passenger, it could also become uncharacteristically aggressive.

We use a cheap Eagloo harness from Amazon which worked perfectly well with our beagle was in the backseat and a van smashed into us.

I personally am not convinced that the expensive, crash-tested harnesses are necessarily any safer.

Mine wear their normal Dog Copenhagen harnesses in the car and I clip a head rest seat belt restraint onto them.

I looked at the crash tested ones and watched the videos this morning. They were only tested at 30mph. And I'm pretty sure at least one of the dogs would have snapped its neck when it flew back into the seat anyway.
