We’ve just adopted a pug!

We’ve just adopted a 2 ye old pug. She’s a beauty but I’ve noticed she seems to be itching a lot. She’s on royal canine pug food and is flea treated. What can I do to help her.

Royal Canin is terrible food, I would e looking to change her onto something that doesn't contain chicken as it can often be a factor in itchy dogs, have a look at All about dog food as it lists and grades most foods available in the UK and the price per day.

coeliacsucks · 11/11/2025 21:13

Ooh thanks. I’m not bothered how much it costs just told that was a good one! I’ll have a look. Can you recommend any

Aatu Kibble is very good

muddyford · 12/11/2025 06:26

My Labrador is sensitive to chicken and as soon as we swapped to a salmon-based food the itchiness stopped.

Something that's mostly meat/fish with some veg, but low on cereal fillers. Doesn't have to have zero grains, but they shouldn't be first in the ingredients list!

Single source proteins are useful if you suspect allergies, as said above chicken is quite a common one in dogs so try and find something based on another meat/fish.

Some decent budget friendly brands to look at are Markus Muhle, Millie's Wolfheart and Purizon 80/20, or if money is no object then Aatu or Eden.

I use Butternut Box for my lot.

Also…you don’t seem to have paid your pic tax..?

Lennonjingles · 12/11/2025 06:37

If her skin is dry, you could try adding salmon oil to her food, it really helps my border collie. I feed Butternut Boxes to my dog, it’s frozen meat and veg, there’s a link if you want to try it at 60% off your first box (and 30% off your second box) of Butternut Box meals. That's freshly prepared dog food, cooked like you would at home, and delivered to your door. No need to thank me - I'll get 60% off my next box too. Go us. Check it out here: https://butternutbox.com/Mandy460?share_source=whatsapp

It could be the food (and Royal Canin is rubbish), but pugs tend to itch a lot when they are stressed too. They are sensitive little ones sometimes and a change in environment can make them itch. (They lick a lot more if they are stressed too.) So it might be something that eases when she settles in to her new home. Check her nose wrinkle too, if it’s sore or dirty that will make her itchy.

I used all about dogs review site to find the best rated kibble which my pug has with “different dog” food, it’s like butternut box. She has a bit of salmon oil on it.

Oh what a darling! How are her teeth?

Zippedydodah · 12/11/2025 13:36

My Boston x Frenchie rescue had dreadful skin when I adopted her, she’s 8.
Fish4Dogs salmon has totally cleared it up, been on it 9 months now.

coeliacsucks · 12/11/2025 14:31

Her teeth seem fine it’s just 2 small patches of itchy skin driving her bonkers

MuttsNutts · 13/11/2025 13:30

Sounds like her food may well need changing but that’s going to take time to help. In the meantime, it’s worth getting some of this. It’s a natural product and absolutely fantastic for itchy patches, hotspots or small scratches or cuts.

MuttsNutts · 13/11/2025 13:32

Sorry, link didn’t work!

It’s Leucillin Antiseptic Spray - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AOC8EIY?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder_k0_1_4&amp=&crid=1X4665KRZ0H0L&amp=&sprefix=leuc

Hi op, we have a pug and he has very bad skin. If you bath her use Malden shampoo. It helps our boy lots. Pigs are prone to bad skin. Ours got that bad he takes half a steroid every morning and it controls it. When he was younger is was a few small patches but he scratches all over now. Also, enjoy your new pug. She will be your best friend and you will never ever go to the bathroom alone again haha.
here’s our old boy, he’s 10 now

@coeliacsucks I have your puggys twin.. literally. She also suffers from allergies. She didn’t get on with steroids (it was the only time I have ever seen her cross) and is now on Monthly citopoint through a vet. It really helps as she suffers… tears at her skin, eyes, etc.
if you want more info then dm me :)

What an adorable little snowball!

Mumofyellows · 13/11/2025 19:15

She’s really cute! Enjoy, rescuing my girl is the best thing I’ve done ❤️

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/11/2025 20:01

Your life will never be the same - expect company on the toilet, to fall over pug when cooking and to have them sat on your head on the back of the sofa.
I miss my beautiful sniffly boy.
if you have never heard this - have a listen

Very common with puggles alas (and a raft of other problems). Have you found a vet who is familiar with the breed? Really helps.

She's a beauty all right

coeliacsucks · 13/11/2025 20:08
