What age was your dog toilet trained by?

11 week old Maltipoo, not using pads apart from in playpen and I’m attempting to toilet train outside. She’s still weeing every hour or so, sometimes more often, and definitely hasn’t grasped any concept of only going outside yet

I know it’s early days, but trying to get an idea of how many weeks/months it may take!

Toilet trained? That’d be good.
House trained, surely?

By 4 months both our girls were going outside every 3 or 4 hours and DH took them out once in night. By time they were about 6-7 months old they could last all night in their crate until morning.

My GSD was toilet trained by 11 weeks. We just took her outside every 15 mins and never used puppy pads.

FastFood · 07/11/2025 06:40

I never used pads either. I used the crate but mostly at night.
I'd say within a week to two weeks, he got the jist of it. But he had rare accidents until he was 4-5 months old. He's been reliable since.
I'm really amazed at dogs' capacity to go from "Weeing outside = very good" to "weeing inside = over my dead body".

About 18 months, she would generally go outside but was still hit and miss.

She was so good in the house in general that we were probably too relaxed about it😂. Also we don't have any carpets even upstairs. I remember her weeing in front of me by the open garden door looking at me like she didnt have a care in the world, then trotting outside.😂

My rescue was 5+ months when we got her, never been in a house let alone house trained. She was very traumatised but it only took a couple of weeks to have her housetrained, by just being totally consistent , loads of praise and treats. Maybe I was lucky but it’s never taken longer than a month with any of our dogs, over the years.
I’ve never used puppy pads or crated a dog.

Ha!
We were told that our Lab would be housetrained very quickly but he was 18months before we could 100% guarantee that we wouldn’t come home to a liquid or solid gift on the kitchen floor.

tripleginandtonic · 19/11/2025 20:45

From 8 weeks. Had a few accidents but on the whole was really good.

It’s totally normal for an 11-week-old pup not to have toilet training figured out yet. At that age their bladder is tiny, they can’t hold it for long, and lots of puppies still go every hour or so. You’re not behind at all.

The best thing you can do is stay consistent: take her out frequently (after waking, eating, playing, and every 45-60 minutes in between), and give lots of praise or a small treat the moment she goes outside. If she has an accident indoors, just quietly clean it up, no telling off, as it doesn’t help them learn any faster.

This article has some really clear, practical steps for building the outside-toilet habit: How to train a dog to pee outside.

Most puppies start to “get it” somewhere around 12-16 weeks, and then improve steadily over the next few months. You’re on the right track, it just takes time and repetition!

Somehow, my current dog came to me housetrained at 8 weeks old! Other dogs between 10-16 weeks.

Border collie was 11 weeks old when he came home. He picked it up straight away and I think we've only had 2 accidents in the house. We never used puppy pads, I just used to take him out for around 10 minutes every 45 mins-1 hour. When he did a wee or poo I would say 'yes', click the clicker and give him a small treat. We used to go for a last wee at midnight, take him out again at 3am and again at 6am. Those first few weeks were hard, but I'm glad we put so much effort in.
