Hi all. We recently acquired a very cute dachshund who is having her spay op in Dec. Can anyone give me any advice on what I need to have at home. The vets have said to keep her immobile for 1-2 weeks and avoid her licking the wound. Not keen on a cone for her. Any advice greatfully recieved. Pic for cuteness! She’s 3 and a dream!

You can get soft cushions that go round their necks, or the vet might have suits that she can wear , she might need a cone if she is licking though, you can't watch her 24,/7 and ime dogs adapt fine to the cones,

Thanks @Coffeeishot I was looking at the suits but they’re quite ££ I wonder if there’s an alternative

I agree. I'll also add that you can take off the cone/collar when you take her out for walks.

Yeah she doesn't have to wear it going out, I know they can be divisive, but does she have a crate that she can rest in ? Or even an old travel cot might do just so she isn't running about or pen off a space for her again so she isn't running around.

I would recommend a laparoscopic spay personally. Downtime 2-3 days over 2 weeks with a traditional spay. I've had dogs that have had both and the recovery was so much quicker with the laparoscopic spay.
Either way, you'll need things to keep her brain active to tire her out in the recovery period. Food puzzles, scatter feeding etc. Frozen kongs/lickimats, even some short training sessions (obedience/tricks).
Pet medical suits are much better tolerated than cones and won't damage your legs!

My dog was spayed last month. I kept her crated for the first 10 days and she coped really well. She was even desperate to get back in it after our on lead trips into the garden.
My foster dog is being spayed soon and I plan to fence off an area for her to rest in. She's less mobile than my dog, so won't be trying to jump up over it.
My dog wore a body suit. It was covered by insurance, so I didn't realise how expensive they are. On previous occasions I have bought a babygro from a charity shop for £1.50. She needed her legs covered, but for a spay you could perhaps use a baby's vest.

You can get an inflatable collar quite cheaply. This is smaller than a cone and more comfortable, but does the same job.

Coffeeishot · 03/11/2025 11:39

@SpanielsGalore look at her 😍

itbemay1 · 03/11/2025 12:15

@SpanielsGalorewhat a darling!
thanks all. We haven’t got a crate but am going to get one. Baby grown seems like a good first try and perhaps an inflatable collar.

You might get away with a baby vest for a tiny sausage dog, we bought out blow up collar from Amazon for our dogs neuter we did end up with a cone as he.could reach but play it by ear.

RoseDog · 03/11/2025 12:25

I think the only thing we done was just no walks for the first week or so and build it up slowly, just out for the toilet and back in again, we tried to stop her jumping on the sofa, she done it anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Shen wasnt interested in the scar or stitches, she refused to eat the recovery food the vet gave us so we just gave her little amounts of her own food.

Betteroutdoors · 03/11/2025 12:29

Amazon do spay suits from about £12, we actually ended up with a second hand one from a neighbour which was really useful even though our very bouncy dog actually had a laparoscopic spay so it might be worth asking on local Facebook groups just in case someone has one.

We found it much easier than cones etc

Thatcannotberight · 03/11/2025 13:46

Laparoscopic spay is so much easier for them to recover from. Then it's in 48 hours of garden relief breaks only, followed by a week of on lead walks up to 30 minutes. It's more expensive, but definitely better for them. I used a surgery suit for my Border Terrier. There are cheaper versions on Ebay and Amazon. No cone was needed.
