Olbas oil dog safe?

Just had a massive spider run across the sofa. I remember reading that olbas oil can be used to deter spider so I’ve sprinkled olbas oil on the carpet by the vents on the floor in the living room. It’s only just occurred to me that this might be harmful to my dog! He sleeps in a crate in the living room overnight. Should I move him tonight? (He won’t like it but I want him to be safe) I’m panicking now. He seems ok and is currently dozing on the sofa. He isn’t licking it or interested in it. But I’m guessing it might be a bit overwhelming for a sensitive nosed cocker. Am I overthinking?

Is it made with eucalyptus? If so I’ve got a feeling it’s toxic. That’s why the koalas fall out of the trees, because it drugs them.

From Google :
Olbas oil is not safe for dogs and can be harmful if ingested or applied directly, as it contains strong essential oils that can cause irritation, respiratory distress, or poisoning. While some people use it as a deterrent due to its strong smell, it's crucial to avoid contact and ensure the dog cannot access it, especially since even small amounts of concentrated oils can be toxic. In case of exposure, monitor for signs of distress and consult a vet, particularly if your dog shows difficulty breathing, drooling, staggering, or collapse.
What to do if your dog is exposed

  • Ingestion: If your dog ingests a small amount on something like a dental stick, they will likely experience a bad taste and may vomit. Discard the item, wash your hands, and offer a fresh one.
  • Skin contact: If the oil is spilled on your dog's skin, wash the area immediately with mild soap and water to remove the residue. Monitor for signs of skin irritation like redness or swelling.
  • Inhalation: If your dog inhales the vapors, move them to a well-ventilated area immediately. Watch for signs of respiratory irritation like coughing, sneezing, or wheezing.
  • Seek veterinary care: In any case of significant exposure, especially if symptoms like difficulty breathing, staggering, drooling, or collapse appear, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
How to prevent accidents
  • Keep Olbas oil out of your dog's reach to prevent them from chewing or ingesting it directly.
  • If using Olbas oil in a diffuser, ensure the room is well-ventilated and the dog can leave the area. Avoid using it in small, enclosed spaces.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the oil to avoid transferring it to items your dog might lick or chew.

I think it may be toxic. We had a huge house spider a few nights ago too. Cat dealt with it. He’s more useful than my dogs!

I hope your dog is ok @rexr

I don’t think it is safe for dogs I’m afraid, sorry!

I tried to remove as much as I could and left the windows open for a couple of hours. Stayed up until nearly 2am keeping a close eye on him and he was absolutely fine. We snuggled to keep warm then I wrapped him up in his crate and left the doors to the room wide open. So relieved to hear him at 5.30am. I won’t be using olbas oil again. I was very stressed.

Yes I'll bet you were, so glad everything was ok, what a relief!
