New puppy help please!

We brought our puppy home yesterday she is the sweetest little thing, but I am worried please can anyone help?

She is 8 weeks and is my first puppy, I have only ever had rescues before and not for over a decade due to having young kids.

She slept really well and ate and played yesterday, she actually slept all through from 8-4 which I couldn’t believe. She is honestly a delight and seemed so happy.

This morning she has been sick after playing for a while, fallen asleep and then ate and played. I assumed the vomit was from the stress of moving home and being away from her mum and siblings. She hasn’t been sick since and no signs of illness.

She then went into the back garden played for a bit and then for a poo and then rolled in it.

Due to the poo, I put her in the bath (mild water, mild puppy shampoo, treats etc) washed her and got her out and gave her more treats and she seemed calm. Wrapped her in a towel gave her cuddles and tried to dry her. She’s now started crying and gone off to her cage and won’t let me touch her and is shaking.

She is due a nap, I’ve put her blanket on top of her and turned the heating on, have I traumatised our little pup?

Please be kind, for context she is a much longed for dog I have been researching her breed and how to care for her for 2 years. It wasn’t a light hearted decision. We were unable to find a suitable rescue due to having a cat and youngish children. Her breeder is excellent and I have met several adult dogs she has bred all with excellent recommendations.

She’ll be fine. Let her have her sleep and don’t dwell on it, just let her wake up in her own time and start afresh. If she’s eating, drinking, peeing, poohing and playing I would say she is ok. It’s early days to do a bath so it’s maybe thrown her a bit and it’s cold, I’m sure she will be fine. Congratulations on getting her and have a wonderful time with her

No pics?
Outrageous...

JudgeBread · 24/10/2025 09:42

What breed is she? 8 weeks is the minimum for a puppy to leave its mum and with smaller breeds it's usually best to give them until 10-12 weeks. Totally normal to see a bit of anxiety in a pup at any stage though to be honest.

She'll just be anxious, caused by a new experience. Remember she's a baby who is used to having her mum and siblings around her all the time, every new thing is going to be scary for a while, and a lot of secure adult dogs are massive drama queens about baths!

She'll be ok, she's gone to her cage which is good, means she views it as a safe place - let her use it and have a little breather. As long as she's eating, drinking and going to the toilet there's usually little to worry about.

Lennonjingles · 24/10/2025 09:46

I would visit a vet just to be sure she’s ok. Has she had her vaccinations and worming tablets before you picked her up. It could be nothing, but also it could be something that needs attention.

user2848502016 · 24/10/2025 09:46

I’m sure she’ll be fine, maybe she just didn’t like being dried. I’m sure she’ll be fine after a nap.

amber763 · 24/10/2025 09:56

Aww its overwhelming isn't it? I brought my wee guy home at 12 weeks and was convinced id kill.him by accident. It just takes time. She'll be fine.

SpanielsGalore · 24/10/2025 10:01

Is she shaking or shivering? My dogs shiver when they are wet and cold. I'm sure she'll be fine once she's warmed up and had a nap.
I wouldn't worry too much about a one off vomit. Moving home can have an unsettling affect on their stomachs. If it continues throughout the day, I'd phone the vets though.

rufusshortcake · 24/10/2025 10:02

Thanks so much everyone for the reassurance. I will update you when she wakes up. She’s had her first jabs and worming tablets etc. she is such a lovely girl just want to do right by her. I’ll pop a pic up! Xxx

I think she'd be happier at my house. I'll leave now! 😍

she is adorable. If it were me I'd let her sleep, then lots of cuddles & a couple of treats (or lunch).

just see how she is later.

a bath so soon on top of all the other new stuff isn't ideal. But then neither is rolling in poo!!

LandSharksAnonymous · 24/10/2025 10:08

On the bathing - a good breeder should have gotten them used to being bathed before they return to your home (it's like any form of 'socialisation' - should be done before the puppy leaves otherwise it's too much at once for many to handle). So, as you say it was a good breeder, hopefully it'll not be that which has upset her.

Did she let you cuddle her yesterday, out of interest? If so, then - assuming the breeder did bath her before she left - then it's possible you were too forceful when trying to towel her dry. Puppies are very fragile (surprisingly so) so even if you think you're being gentle you may have startled her.

How is she reacting when you try to touch her? And how are you trying to touch her? Are you trying to lean into the crate, for example? Or pull her out?

Twiglets1 · 24/10/2025 10:14

I'm sure she'll be fine when she wakes up, it sounds to me as though she was just feeling a bit overwhelmed about so many new experiences.

Being a bit sick or rolling in poo is nothing to worry about.

If it's any consolation, I thought we had practically killed our new puppy after 24 hours in our care about 18 months ago as he was very ill his first morning with sickness and diarrhoea and had to be rehydrated by the vet. Looking back on it, he was just in a state probably with the stress of moving. He's a very big, boisterous Labrador now and 100% healthy and robust.

Houndymumma · 24/10/2025 10:40

The first few weeks are usually quite stressful as they settle in (and you settle too). They can have upset tummies, everything can slightly spook them in the first week or so. A good breeder is usually there for any questions, we have a WhatsApp group with our breeder which includes anyone that’s ever had one of her pups. Also a group of us on MN are on the puppy survival thread which is friendly and supportive. The first few weeks is a bit of a baptism by fire with puppies, but it does get easier fairly quickly (with a few ups and downs). Pup is beautiful!

rufusshortcake · 24/10/2025 17:30

Thanks so much everyone for your support! She woke up unfazed and has had an amazing day. Shes been playing, cuddling and has had a big appetite. She’s absolutely brilliant.

the breeder is excellent, she has done all sorts with her firework training, she already has basic recall she has also had bath training.

I thought I was very gentle when towel drying her but I will be even more so next time. Like pp’s have said probably a bit much on top of everything else. but it was all over her back so I couldn’t really have left her without her spreading it all over the house. We’ll get there!

Thanks so much again. I will be in no doubt back tomorrow when I do something else anxiety inducing.

She's gorgeous OP and just settling in. Like other posters I expect the bath was just all a bit new and unsettling.

Arran2024 · 24/10/2025 18:51

She's adorable!

Just wanted to say, if you call the vet about sickness, it will be noted and could affect insurance. This happened to us with our second pup. He was being sick - probably stress, but i was worried and contacted the vet. Pupcwas insured by the breeder with the Kennel Club for the first couple of weeks. We were going to switch to another insurer but then discovered that this sickness counted as an existing condition! So we had to stick with the Kennel Club!

Vitriolinsanity · 24/10/2025 19:21

She is utterly gorgeous. Puppies get overwhelmed really easily and they show it with sick and runny tummies.

As long as she’s drinking and eating, and bright eyed when she’s awake I would put it down to that.

Is she a cockapoo? She looks like my boy when he was tiny.

Vitriolinsanity · 24/10/2025 19:26

I can say with honesty I fussed just as much over DPuppy when he first came as I did DS as a baby. His crate was in my room next to my bed and I would wake in the night and poke him to make sure he wasn’t dead.

rufusshortcake · 24/10/2025 19:57

Oh my god, yes I feel like I’ve had another DD. I woke up so many times last night and did the finger test to check she was breathing. Googling all sorts!

Thanks for the heads up about the vet, I didn’t call them as she was fine after and wanted to play and poos etc were all normal. Did a lot of googling and mentioned it to the breeder so was just extra cautious:

thanks so much to all you lovely lot for seeing me through today!

And sorry she is an Australian labradoodle!

OP try this. Ask Alexa about your breed. I ask Alexa about Cockapoos for a bedtime story for Ddog. It’s aces!

rufusshortcake · 24/10/2025 19:59

And sorry she is an Australian labradoodle!

Ooh I haven’t come across any of those before but she’s beautiful 🥰

Newyearnewmewoooop · 24/10/2025 21:36

Ahh I have a 9 week old, literally bathed her tonight too and she’s been shaking! It freaked me out too but I wrapped her in a blanket and cuddled her to sleep and she was fine when she woke up! She was also sick yesterday! I think it was the stress of new home and possibly ate a leaf 🍁 🫣🤣

BrownOwlknowsbest · 25/10/2025 15:03

Maybe sit her in front of a fan heater on a low setting if she needs a bath again. Warms and dries at the same time.
