Toilet training please help!

9 week old Maltipoo, I’m using treats and special word to reward any toileting on pads, but she’s just going everywhere!

Im literally following her around constantly but that split second I’m not watching she does it 😫

Do I scrap the pads and go to straight outside training? The only reason I haven’t done this from the start is we have rats in the garden and obviously there’s a risk due to that (live on a farm)

I didn’t use the pads, I’d say outside then ‘good girl for doing a pee , well done on your Ps’ etc etc.

Sagaciously · 23/10/2025 16:27

We didn’t use pads. Just went outside every 20 mins and gave lots of praise.

LilacLemur · 23/10/2025 16:29

Yes scrap the pads - far too confusing for them. Take her put every 20 minutes and stay outside until she goes. If after 10 mins bring her back in but hold her and try again in a few minutes.

Also take her out after drinking, eating, playing and upon waking.

Will feel like a full time job but she’ll get the hang of it much sooner.

good luck!

Newyearnewmewoooop · 23/10/2025 16:29

Will she be ok though being outside before she’s had her next set of vaccines?

Ditch the pads. It’s too confusing for them. Plus, with autumn here, who wouldn’t want to pee inside especially given the option?

Crate or confine her but take her out after naps, playing, eating and at least every hour. When you see her squat, say “go pee pee” and then as she’s peeing “good pee pee”, treat and huge fuss ONCE she’s finished

Newyearnewmewoooop · 23/10/2025 16:31

@LilacLemur, so if I try this starting tomorrow, if she doesn’t go outside I keep hold of her carrying her around the house until putting her back down once out again?

I didn't use pads either.

I used a puppy pen to contain him outside as our garden wasn't fully puppy proof.

Took him out every 15 mins and straight after food, after naps. Increased to 20 mins, then half hour, then hour until he got it. Carried him out so he didn't stop and pee on his way out.

He was confined to the kitchen inside (tiled floors) popped him in his crate if I went out of the room.

I use "busy" and lots of treats/praise. He can pee on demand which is useful on roadtrips or when its raining.

Coffeeishot · 23/10/2025 16:43

She will. Pee where she likes because she is so little I mean how long have you had her ? Take her out every 20-30 minutes if you want to use puppy pads keep them at door entrances or the back door, I used them at night only with my dog. When you take her out say go pee or which ever word you use wait until she pees then mark with a "who's a good dog" then give her a treat when you take her in, be prepared for accidents for a few weeks yet a good enzyme spray for cleaning.

LandSharksAnonymous · 23/10/2025 16:45

I just offered some advice on this on the puppy thread (sorry)!

If you have a private garden then your puppy will absolutely be fine. When I toilet train litters, I start at 6 weeks and I've never had an issue (but obviously not in the big wide world - only my own garden).

But puppy pads are awful, and it's very hard to ween dogs off them. They are up there with 'healthy' brownies and 'low-calorie hot chocolate' on my 'should never have been created' list.

Lennonjingles · 23/10/2025 16:49

Don’t use pads, it just confuses them, thinking it’s ok to go indoors. If it’s your own garden, then yes, it’s as safe as can be. We had cooked chicken ready every single time our puppy went outside, he soon learned he got a good reward for going outside. It takes a while, doesn’t happen overnight, but if you put the work in now, it’s worthwhile. I remember those days, staying outside for ages, only to come back inside and he went as soon as I turned by back.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 23/10/2025 16:49

Well, at 9 weeks old it's what they do! They wee everywhere.
Our pup was trained using puppy pads and it worked brilliantly. However, unless you want her still using them at 6 months old, you do need a routine with going outside.

As soon as pup wakes up, take her outside and don't bring her back in until she's toileted. It's good girl, lots of praise. I never gave treats for toileting though... After food, outside, same. After play, same.

If you don't want her to go outside at all, you probably need a playpen to restrict her to one area. As soon as she starts sniffing, you put her on the pad in the pen and wait. She wakes up, likewise, after food, after play etc.

It needs to be a routine.
Some pick it up quickly, some take a bit longer.

I won't repeat what PPs have said about scrapping the pads, but I found logging every single pee and poo, date and time, absolutely invaluable. You can see when they last went and see the glacially slow progress!

Yes, I used to keep a loo log on my phone just to see what the pattern was.

I was going to suggest something like this. I didn’t write mine down, but getting in to a rhythm and knowing roughly how often he went was really useful. He’s a lab and on the larger side so he could hold his bladder that bit longer. So at first we were outside every half an hour at least (I got him in June but remember the first week it pissed it down so I was stood there with a golf umbrella and the puppy looking up at me in the rain like I was an evil witch) it ended up being that every half an hour was too frequent!
I also added a cue word, gave him a treat/praise and for several months now he will wee on cue (if he needs to go of course) and luckily I don’t have to go outside with him anymore 😂 just open the door and say ‘wee wees’ like a lunatic and off he goes.

Sorry if this is useless waffle, he’s my first dog and this is just what worked for us 😊

I kept my log in a notebook and have filed it away so I have an idea of timing with the next puppy!

Oh im having no more puppies, we will be too old and grouchy by the time our dog is no longer here, I think i.read it in a puppy book about the logging.

Newyearnewmewoooop · 24/10/2025 16:01

UPDATE

I have been doing as advised and keeping a log, I have got rid of the pads and all wees and poos have been outside today 👍
