Hurt paw - PLEASE help I’m at my wits end

My 8 yo goldie has a small cut on his paw. The last 48 hours have been a nightmare. He seems totally fine in the house but refuses to walk outside or go on the lawn. He seems more up for walking with a sock on but they inevitably fall off. Today his booties from Amazon came and they seem really good. He’s able to walk in the garden on them but wouldn’t leave our cul de sac. He’s had a similar sized cut before. I’m giving him painkillers. I’m knackered. I don’t know what a vet could do more. It’s not a huge cut and it looks very clean. Im washing it and drying it.

I have had to get up 40+ to stop him licking. Thankfully his boots fit well. And the licking has all but stopped with them on.

Should I sit in the garden and he would go if he really needed? He’s wee’d fine. But won’t poop. He hasn’t gone in 36 hours!

what more can I do?

I sent them a pic yesterday and they said to keep doing what I’m doing!

He’s much happier with the booites. He was wanting to play football.

I’d be more worried about him not poo-ing if he’s normally very regular. If he still hasn’t poo-ed by tomorrow, maybe take him to the vet at that point?

CharlieKirkRIP · 21/10/2025 10:20

Could be a grass seed stuck inside that needs removing. They are very painful and not always immediately visible.

Stormwhatnow · 21/10/2025 10:21

What painkillers are you using if you've not been to the vet? Could be causing constipation depending on what your using.

He’s on meloxaid for a chronic issue. So by painkiller I mean he’s being given that.

I’ve taken a very zoomed in photo and it looks totally clear. Just a very small red patch. He seems to have gotten worse despite having been rested. He walked fine on Friday and Saturday.

Thanks he’s very regular goes on every walk. I’m sick to my stomach knowing he’s probably in massive discomfort re poo.

What did they advise?

What did they advise?

They said that it’s hard to tell from the pic how deep the wound is. That he might need stitches as pads are hard to heal.

Im going to have to wait for my husband to come home from work as my poor boy is refusing to walk to where our car is.

This is a nightmare.

he’s happy enough in the house. No limping. Playing. Finding treats when i hide them etc.

And what did they say about him not going to poo?

Blosheen · 21/10/2025 10:36

He’s sleeping quite happily now. I’ll let him get as relaxed as possible and maybe try again with the walk after I’ve given him next dose of meloxaid. We did leave the house a bit stressed when we tried before (delivery, screaming baby)

He pooed and he’s much happier on the new sock thing that came this evening. He’s had a play inside (tug of war/hide and seek) and was able to poo in the garden. What a fucking relief. Thank you to those who replied. Having support when I was despairing was very helpful x

Tiger Toe socks are much easier for them than the boots. They stay on for one thing. We use them for our bernese. He is extra large size. You can get them from amazon

PolkaDotPorridge · 21/10/2025 22:29

I can’t believe you wouldn’t go straight to the vet! Honestly!

He was totally fine the first two days. Went on his walks and was playing (he only does two small 15 mins due to a chronic condition). I was keeping the cut clean and dry and covered it with socks. He’s had a similar injury before and the vets didn’t really offer anything I wasn’t already doing. He also has painkillers for the chronic condition and the vets said I couldn’t give him more than that.

it was yesterday where he wouldn’t go on the grass or walk outside. I feel guilty but I did ring and email a pic yesterday and the vet said I was doing all the right things.

He’s been totally fine inside the house. The only issue was outside yesterday and this morning. He still did all his wees

Hindsight is 20:20.

Thanks. Will have a look. Do they not constantly fall off? Had that issue with the human socks I was putting on my dog even with the Velcro I tied on

No they do stay on. They aren't cheap, but for short term use, they are the best. My dog has a degenerative condition which causes his legs to knuckle, so we have tried all sorts of footwear options. The tiger toe socks are the easiest all round. And they don't come off like the boots do.

Arriving today, thanks for the suggestion. I currently have him in this device but I think it’s only really needed for outside/possibly at night. Thx
