Fireworks

My dog is three years old. Previously she didn’t notice the fireworks but suddenly they are the scariest thing EVER. Yesterday evening there were quite a few bangs and she’s shaking with fear.

Any tips for helping through this would be welcome.

I've had some success with a thundershirt and the yumove calming tablets. Background noise and relaxing music to mask the bangs and draw the curtains. It's difficult isn't it when it's basically now months of the year where people are setting off fireworks? I took on a rescue a few months back who is basically scared of everything and the fireworks have set her back quite a bit the past couple of weeks.

Hope you find something which helps your pooch.

I’ve never had a dog scared of the fireworks, I’m clueless about what to do. Last night I put the radio on in the kitchen and turned up the TV but she was still shaking. She came up on the sofa with me and I cuddled her.

When we had our Border Collies, they used to be really scared of fireworks. This used to help them. I put drops on cheese. ( link)
Not just one night or weekend anymore though is it? Our Spaniels aren’t that bothered though the youngest can be spooked by louder ones.

I sympathise and will follow the thread with interest.
I suspect we're in for a difficult time too, with our noise sensitive Pyrenean girl of 18 months.
The fact that November 5th falls midweek will likely mean fireworks on that day and on two consecutive weekends 😨

Dorwest valarian tincture and tablets are good and nutrapet calm tabs - in a brown packet. You have to cut open the tablets and spread on their food. If really bad then Bach rescue remdy for dogs (but can use people one) drops on some food.

One of mine hates fireworks. He has an adaptil collar on from mid October (it lasts a month), and then on the peak days we give him Dorwest skullcap and valerian alongside making sure all doors/curtains are closed by 5, radio in kitchen/ TV on in sitting room and then we let him get on with it and don't make a big fuss.
He's gone from hiding under the bed drooling for hours to sitting on the sofa shaking but gets over it quickly

I find playing firework videos on YouTube has been really helpful as it’s got my dog used to hearing the noises on a gradually increasing volume, then I play them louder when actual fireworks are going off, then decrease the volume and find he’s quite relaxed then. I’ve done this from day one of getting him though to desensitise him a bit, so he’s fairly chilled now

Great idea, I’m definitely going to try that. Thank you. It’s been quieter tonight, I hated seeing her frightened.
