Stinky dog raincoat - any tips?

My golden retriever isn’t bothered about rain himself but for the sake of the house (and my sanity) he has a raincoat, and waterproof overalls for really bad weather. We live rurally and he gets filthy just going for a normal walk when the weather’s bad.

Both the raincoat and overalls have a stinky cheesy smell and normal washing hasn’t removed it fully. Any ideas on how to get rid of the smell?

We keep on top of his coat with regular brushing and baths so it’s not that he’s particularly smelly himself. I don’t think it’s due to them having put away damp either as they always get air-dried after use. But they are stinking out my cupboard!

I use a veterinary pet bed wash. Think it's called Pet Bed Wash! I use it for their beds and drying coats. It's not cheap but the dogs' laundry smells as fresh as mine. For waterproofs I would use a very dilute solution in tepid water, rinsing well. I bought it on Amazon.

They need to be washed after basically every use of they end up stinking, IME.

BadActingParsley · 15/10/2025 07:03

Yes they need washed every time.

I agree wash or rinse after every use!
I don't buy overpriced pet wash... I usually use either bio washing powder or sports cloths washing liqid. I don't have a problem with doggy smells.

Depends what your normal wash is. I'd be washing it on a hot wash (40+) for at least an hour and a half with measured powder detergent for heavy soiling.

Thanks all, seems like I’ll need to wash more regularly from now on.

@muddyford what’s your guess on whether the pet wash will remove the smell now? Normal washing hasn’t solved it.

@NotMeekNotObedient it’s not thet they are soiled, generally they’re just wet with a bit of mud. It just seems to be thet dog smell clings.

It got rid of the doggy stench of their beds. You asked for suggestions and that was mine.

oh I really appreciate the suggestion, just wondered whether you thought it would
remove a smell that’s already potentially embedded. A few others have said the best approach is washing after each use but I’ve missed that boat so trying to unwind it!

I’ll definitely check out the wash you suggested

It got rid of the smell in their beds which everything else had failed to tackle. Good luck. It also works on musty clothes! (DH had secreted an unwashed dressing gown in a drawer!).

I wash everything often. When the smell doesn’t go even after washing, I bin it and replace the item. Nothing gets rid of the smell eventually.

Aw, I bet your dog loves the smell of his raincoat OP.

Haha, probably! Just like when he perfects his stink rolling in something unspeakable and is so wounded when we bath him 😂
